As a Brit in voluntary exile (The Hague and Cyberspace) I am just not sure whether what is happening in the UK is another Watergate. 'Water' just seems too neutral a word for the fluid flowing through the gate right now...
The spirit of solidarity manifests itself wherever drive exists. This is why we appreciate this new found frienship and will ever keep the struggle in SOLIDARITY.
Hi, Thanks, Can you find someone with a little time to chat with me to explain the Social support systems in Europe in general? Things like British vacation pay is 12% of your annual pay; and Belgium provides 1200 Euros per month to be their minimum annual income. I need this because there is no reporting over here. All we here is "there is no money to care decently for people." But life seems much more comfortable generally in Europe.
I saw today the French provide sick pay when illness keeps a worker off the job. That is only supplied to a protected class over here. http://vur.me/s/French_Health.
If someone would like to chat with me telling what it's like over there, my Skype address is { joseph.c.skues }.
Here in Michigan I feel like a Stranger. All State officials, the house and senate are all conservative tearing down life for all our workforce. So I'm gathering facts about how workers are treated in Europe so I can offer hope to my neighbors.
Thanks for expressing solidarity in extending a UnionBook hand for me to become a 'friend; of the L&D Trades Council group on UnionBook - an honour and privilege!
If there is anything I can do to further the work of the Trades Council via my role at Ruskin College (a great place for a summer school!) please do get in touch.
Thanks Bernard. No rush but one thing we were considering was an exhibition of badges, banners and flags with accompanying book explaining their origins and history involving unions and trades councils that contributed to the Lockout Fund in 1913.
I am working with SIPTU, Ireland's largest union, on the centenary of the Great Dublin Lockout of 1913. Most of the funds that kept the strike going for over five months between August 1913 and February 1914 came from British trade unions. We are trying to build links with trades councils, unions, co-ops, Labour Party branches and other groups who mobilised support for the Lockout. The list is not meant to be exclusive but all ideas welcome. You can also post blogs on www.1913committee.ie if interested.
Thanks for friendship/comradeship - I'll be at the CanaadianLabourCongress next week with a display table of union made goods. I'll load some pictures for you.
