The Rally Against School Closings and Charter Invasions was scheduled for Thursday Jan. 27 at New York City Hall.  The night before, 19 inches of snow fell in our city, the greatest snow so far this winter.  For the first time this season, schools were closed.  The rally went on, and around 200 demonstrated.  In my opinion, it would have been much, much larger and broader if the weather had been better.  The marching band and the students who spoke were great highlights of the day.  Kudos to Grassroots Education Movement, the lead organizers.

Hello Marian,

My apologies for the delay in responding back. CEIU (Canada Employment & Immigration Union) is a component of PSAC (Public Service Alliance of Canada). I am Vice President and Treasurer of my Local 570. I am also on CEIU - RVAC (Racially Visible Action Committee) and also an alternate on the CEIU- HRRR (Human Rights Race Relation Committee).

I work as an Agent in the Employment Insurance branch of Service Canada. I enjoy working with the Union as it gives me a great deal of satisfaction to see issues resolved between members and Management.

Hi Marian, the NTEU represents everyone who works in a university - from the cleaners to the professors - across Australia. In addition, in my state of Victoria, we represent everyone who works in adult and community education, and a fair swag of those who work in the vocational and technical colleges (with the exception of state-employed teachers).

In Australia we also have the Australian Education Union, which covers everyone who works in government schools and those state-employed technical and vocational college teachers, and the Independent Education Union, which covers everyone who works in private and church schools and in the private vocational education providers.

So between us all, every education worker has a union to call home. Our head offices are all in one building and we collectively go under the name of "Federation of Education Unions".

I work for the NTEU as an industrial officer, which is a cross between a negotiator and an advocate, and represent members across the full breadth of our coverage.

It's great to be in touch with education unionists around the world.

I'm thinking about the London transport workers on strike against layoffs. Our transit workers took layoffs this summer. Good luck, London transport workers.
