Steelworkers certify security guards at Immigration Prevention Centre

The private security guards at the Immigration Prevention Centre unionized with the United Steelworkers on April 17, 2012. The Centre, run by the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) in Laval, Quebec, uses security guards from the Garda Security Group. The Centre holds people before they are deported from Canada.

The certification order, released by the Canadian Industrial Relations Board (CIRB), gives the Steelworkers the right to represent all Garda Security guards working in Quebec for Border Services.

The Steelworkers are affiliated with the CSN - Confédération des syndicats nationaux, a Quebec labour central.

The question I have is whether unionized guards will treat the detainees any better than the non-unionized ones. Will unionization improve conditions?
