Georgian Union Leaders Meet Israeli Union Leaders and...er...President?

Peter sez:

Story 1: This is the take of Eric Lee's Labour Zionist site, TULIP, on a Georgian TU visit to Israel. Worthy of note during a period of growing international union, church and social movement criticism of Israel and its major union centre, Histadrut. But I clicked on the Georgian link Eric provided and found...

Story 2: For which the main interest seems to be less that of meeting Histadrut than the President of Israel!

Even if I was myself a Labour Zionist, I think that before celebrating this as some kind of victory I would want to know more about the motives of the GTUC in visiting Israel and why it seems to give such high importance to meeting with a President who is not only, of course, a Zionist but also carrying out neo-liberal policies that have provoked Israeli labour, student and public protests.

Now read on...

Story 1:

Union leaders from Georgia visit Israel, meet Peres, Eini

Tuesday, August 14th, 2012

The President of the Georgian Trade Union Confederation (GTUC), Irakli Petriashvili [pictured], visited Israel last month together with two other colleagues.  They attended the congress of the Histadrut, met with its leader Ofer Eini, and also met the President of Israel, Shimon Peres.  There is a short report on the visit on the GTUC website.

The GTUC is a dynamic national trade union centre with a young leadership formed in struggle against a very hostile and right-wing government in Tbilisi.  The International Trade Union Confederation ran an interview with Petriashvili last year about their fight for workers’ rights and a better labour law in the former Soviet republic.

It includes 25 trade unions (two of them regional and 23 sectoral) representing almost 260,000 members (about 45% of the entire workforce of the country).

Like many national trade union centres, the GTUC maintains a cordial relationship with Israel’s unions and will have nothing to do  the campaigns to boycott Israel or its trade union movement.

Story 2:

16.07.12. President of GTUC – Irakli Petriashvili was met the President of Israel – Shimon Peres while officially visiting Israel.  Mr. Peres was interested in knowing the situation of Georgia about the current developments and pre-election processes.

At the Meeting, the President of Israel - Peres also expressed his great interest about the situation of Georgian Trade Union movement. The meeting was held in warmly and friendly atmosphere.
