Algeria. Yet another government move to block independant unions...

LabourStart.fr (the French version of LabourStart) is supporting a campaign launched by CISA, an association supporting independent unions in Algeria. After closing down their HQ earlier this year, the government has found a way to stop SNAPAP's President, Rachid Malaoui, from visiting Europe. On a previous stay in 2006, he was hospitalised for an emergency. By convention, his social security should have picked up the bill but didn't. Now French authorities are holding him personally responsible for 16,5 K€ and blocking visas to the Schengen area until it's paid. On a minimal algerian wage, no way can he manage that. As he should be attending official hearings on workers rights in Algeria as well as meeting unions in the near future... That's very convenient, isn't it? Any help, financial or otherwise, appreciated. Contact me via UnionBook or andy@labourstart.fr
