Labour and Social Protest News from South Africa

Peter sez:
I get this email about once a month from the Centre for Civil Society, Durban, South Africa. Although this is not a labour- or union-specific site, it certainly carries a lot of labour and social protest reports. The CCS is also the base for the Debate website, from which I occasionally copy and paste items to UBook.

Some Questions about the Forthcoming LabourStart Conference

I am raising these questions here because the conference pages on UB do not seem to be too active yet.

Since I don't have any institutional or union backing, I will not be able to attend but will certainly take advantage of any such online access as Eric is proposing. Given the title, 'From Social Networks to Social Revolutions', and the red flag symbol, plus its siting in the volatile periphery between Europe and the so-called Global South, I am very much looking forward to this…

Launch: Labour and Precarious Liberation (Franco Barchiesi, Centre for Civil Society, Durban, South Africa)

Topic:

Millions of black South African workers struggled against apartheid to redeem employment and production from a history of abuse, insecurity, and racial despotism. Almost two decades later, however, the prospects of a dignified life of wage-earning work remain unattainable for most South Africans. Through extensive archival and ethnographic…

Egypt at ILO: New Unions Condemn Old at International Labour Conference (CTUWS, Egypt)

Peter sez:

A compelling story about unions and the ILO. It raises in my mind a question not only about the ILO itself, accepting for decades Egyptian (previously Communist) state-controlled unions as legitimate representatives of workers they controlled and oppressed. It also raises a question about what other inter/national trade unions…

Abstract: Workers' Participation and Control: Worlds Apart (Christopher Gunn, Rev Radical Pol Econ, USA)

Workers' Participation in Management, Workers' Control of Production: Worlds Apart

Christopher Gunn gunn@hws.edu Hobart & William Smith Colleges

Abstract

For several decades workers’ participation in management was a persistent demand of the left. In the neoliberal era it became, in a twisted way, a reality for some workers. Team organization of production, reduction of supervisory staffing, and a constant drive for productivity improvement became…

Unions, European Social Forum, Euro-Left Parties on the Crisis and Alternatives

Since September 2010, forces involved in the European Social Forum and In European social mobilisations wished to organise this conference, a year after the European-wide hyper-austerity agreement:

Unique Union Document on the National and International Labour Movement (Cosatu, South Africa)

Peter sez:

I have only rapidly scanned this document but I have to say that it is the most ambitious and internationally-conscious national union document that I am aware of, certainly at the present moment and as far back as I have been active in or on the international labour movement.

It therefore provides a basis for serious international discussion that we have not seen from the Eurocentric and Social-Reformist  ITUC in Brussels, the Eurocentric and…
