right to Work is Wrong for Everyone, Will You Stand With Us?
I'm outraged about the latest right-wing scam! Indiana just became the 23rd state to adopt a "right-to-work" law. Now extremist politicians are pushing right to work wherever they can -- Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, Ohio, and states around the country.
But right to work isn't about rights or work. In fact, right-to-work laws drive down job standards for all of us.
Will you join me in fighting back against this deceptive policy? We need to take a stand to…

Strong Unions: The Worst Nightmare for the Financial Elite
Man wouldn't pay you unless he had to.
- Chris Rock
The antiunion movement in the United States keeps us underpaid and represents a serious impediment to economic growth. Yet antiunion sentiment remains strong among the political establishment and their patrons. Why?
Worker rights and a decent wage represent a toxic brew to the ruling…

Greece: Trade union leaders arrested following protests
On Thursday 24 November 2011, the Greek police arrested Nikos Photopoulos, President of the power workers' union GENOP/DEI, along with more than a dozen of his fellow trade unionists. They will appear in court on Tuesday 10 January 2012 to face charges that could see them jailed for up to five years. They were protesting against part of the Greek austerity measures - the cutting off of power to people unable or unwilling to pay a new, swingeing property tax, levied regardless of income or…

No Poor Man Ever Gave Me a Job
“No poor man ever gave me a job.” How many times have you heard that one? Sadly, these words are often spoken by a working class person who should know better. It’s always said with a self-satisfied sneer, sometimes accompanied by some racial or gender slurs. Maybe you’ve heard people repeating the cruel sound bites from TV about how lazy and irresponsible poor people supposedly are.
I’m not much good at snappy comebacks, so here is what I would like to say in response…

French Revolution 'Redux' or 'The New Feudalism'? Income gaps and democratic ideals
In 1972, Chinese Communist leader, Zhou En-lai, was reported to have answered US President Richard M. Nixon's question on the impact of the French revolution on western civilization, with the line that 'it is still too early to tell'.
While it may still be too early to tell, one thing the French revolution did give us was the trio of ideals of 'equality, solidarity and liberty', and of course out of those we got liberalism and socialism and, in reaction against the…

IT workers-The new Masons?
Hello my brothers and sisters,
First, let me announce, here on UnionBook that Alliance@IBM CWA will be sending a representative to Switzerland for a meeting of Union representatives of IBM workers, worldwide. This meeting will be in May 2011, and the agenda is rather basic. IBM workers are international or 'global'; as is the company for whom they work. There are countries in Europe, with IBM locations, that are comprised of unions and 'works councils'. Japan, Argentina, Chile,…

Dirt Diggers Digest: "The Selective Sanctity of Contracts" [in the U.S.], by Phil Mattera
http://dirtdiggersdigest.org/archives/1918
"Along with the rule of law and private property rights, the sanctity of contracts is considered fundamental to 'economic freedom.' Yet certain kinds of contracts, namely the collective bargaining agreements of U.S. public sector workers, are now starting to be regarded as dispensable...
"These assaults on the contract rights of public workers are said to be…

Chris Carlsson: Beyond 'Decent Work'...in 1992!
Still going strong, a decade or two later, this argument and its author continue to challenge a labour movement that - Right, Centre and Left - is still overwhelmingly trapped within a capitalist notion of work.
The item was originally published in 'Processed World', a little magazine that was aware of the 'information…
