Union campaign against very real global internet censorship threat at UN

Today, I will be mostly worrying about the International Telecommunication Union...

So basically, there's this UN agency that was set up in 1865 to facilitate telegram standards.

Now China, Iran, Russia, Saudi, and a whole rogues gallery of countries are trying to give it the power to regulate the Internet. And not just the pipes, as they're used to, but to regulate what people are actually allowed to do on it, and how traffic moves between countries.

Worse, the…

Results of the first annual survey of trade union use of the net

The total number of participants in the survey was 1,336 making it one of the largest we’ve ever done.

The countries providing the largest number of responses were predictably mostly Anglophone as the survey was only conducted in English this time. Here are the ten largest groups:

  • United Kingdom – 260
  • USA – 243
  • Canada – 236
  • Australia – 167
  • Ireland – 45
  • Norway – 40
  • New Zealand – 39
  • India –…

UnionBook is now even easier to join and use

We've just added the 'social sign-in' feature introduced by Ning. What this means, in (almost) plain English, is that if you have an account on Facebook, Yahoo or Google, you can sign in with those details (including your password) if you don't remember your details on UnionBook. And when we recruit new members to UnionBook, they can set up their accounts using details from Facebook, Yahoo and Google -- no need to remember all those log-ins and passwords. So the next time someone says, 'what,… Continue

UnionBook in dozens of languages

Look at the upper right corner of this page - select a language. See what happens. OK, this is not perfect but it's a huge step forward.

And yes, we're ramping up the pressure on Ning to allow users to select their own languages for UnionBook.

Another reason why Facebook $ucks and why you should join Unionbook

Yet another reason how Facebook $ucks and why union members should join UnionBook. FB has a new groups policy that allows groups to add you as a member without you requesting to be added. Gone is the old setup where you received an invitation. Now, you apparently don't even receive a notification that you have "joined" a group.

The group just shows up on your sidebar and in your news feed. You can be made a member of a group whose views you do not accept, indeed one that might subject… Continue

This is a clear indication of what you all want, and that's why we've decided to make the move… Continue
