Ukraine: Where Should the Left Stand?

Peter sez:

OK, this is the promised alternative position on the Ukraine - which I have now endorsed. You may note that it comes from a World Social Forum site, and I happen to know the initiator, Tord Bjork as an activist in the World and European Social Forums, as well as other of the new wave of global solidarity movements.

Alternative opinions on this initiative would be welcome.

Australia: The Role of Compulsory Arbitration in Producing 'Dependent' Unionism

Peter sez:

A fascinating piece by Liz Humphrys, known to me previously only (only?) as a co-editor of Interface: A Journal of and for Social Movements. One of the points of such fascination is that Australia is sometimes pointed to (like Sweden) as demonstrating the very model of trade unionism, industrial relations and the welfare state.

Israel/Palestine: How to Stop Palestinians Unionising Withing Israeli Occupied Zones

Peter sez:

This story comes from +972, an Israeli 'blog-based website', which has an interesting and challenging mandate, surely relevant to any international(ist) labour website that wishes to encourage debate, discussion and dialogue - also under more liberal regimes than that of Zionist Israel.

South Africa: Report on International Symposium of Left Parties and Movements (August 2014)

Peter sez:

Apart from its value as an independent and critical report on this South African event, I think it provides some kind of model for such, still lacking in the case of not only major international trade union events (such as the ITUC Congresses) but also conferences, schools or whatever of such autonomous union-oriented bodies as LabourStart and the Global Labour Institute. Which is not to say I necessarily agree with either what took place at the…

Israel: Former Army Intelligence Soldiers Refuse to use Extortion and Blackmail on Palestinians.

Peter sez:

Apart from being impressed by the civic courage of these soldiers, I am moved to read that some of them were themselves moved to take action after seeing the film about a DDR (Communist East German) Stasi wire-tapper, 'The Lives of Others'. As someone who lived a total of five years in Communist Czechoslovakia, I have seen this film several times, recognising both the moral depths to which Statist Communism went and the quiet courage of the Stasi…

Israel: ITUC Complicity with Zionist Histadrut, Opposition to BDS Resolution Revealed, in this 2012 Report

Peter sez:

Evidence of the complicity of the Eurocentred ITUC with the Zionist Israeli trade union confederation, the Histadrut, is revealed in an item from its website celebrating the squashing of the South African Cosatu BDS resolution before it reached the Congress plenum.

The item also suggests how rapidly and completely things have changed in succeeding years, particularly with the inhuman Israeli war on Gaza, 2014. The British…

Israel/Gaza: 'Protective Edge' = Human Cost for Gaza: Expansion and even Profits for Israel?

Peter Sez:

There is a Labour Zionist argument that worldwide condemnation of its war on the Palestinian Ghetto of Gaza is due to either ignorance, anti-semitism, self-hating Jews, or inactivity by trade union friends of Israel. This account suggests a more obvious explanation, that it is the extreme violence, destruction, massive civilian deaths, of a state that on the one hand boasts of its Western, liberal, democratic, human values ('the only democracy in…
