|Looking back at Labor Day's turbulent origins
This comes from the UK left journal, Soundings. It revives a historical left debate about 'work for capital' that goes back to the brilliant heterdox essay by Paul Lafargue (son in law of Marx?), 'The Right to be Lazy'. It poses a hypothetical challenges to the ILO/ITUC/ETC (etcetera) campaign for 'Decent Work', which should now be seen as 'Decent Useless Work'. But it poses a more general challenge to the union movement, which…Continue

An excellent analysis of a South African process, reproduced in the West (historically) and in much of the Rest (more recently and rapidly). I can't wait for what is likely to be the more problematic Part 2!

In so far as this prominent UK Liberal Zionist (and citizen of Israel) here declares both Liberal Zionism and the two-state solution dead, and in so far as he shows respect for the radical Israeli? Zionist? Jewish? left, I would have thought this piece poses a challenge to such a prominent Labour Zionist as Eric Lee (creator of both this site and of LabourStart. This blog site would seem a suitable one for him to respond to such a…Continue

GLOBALIZATION, INTERNATIONAL LABOUR MIGRATION AND RIGHTS OF MIGRANT WORKERS
Migration of human beings across borders and nations results in cultural diversity and interaction between cultures. A source of major tension in the present world is the lack of understanding or appreciation of the value of this cultural diversity or lack of respect for different cultures and beliefs that migrants bring into host…Continue

An important initiative despite one of the signators being the International Association of Democratic Lawyers, a member of which is a North Korean state front organisation!

Wallerstein, a US citizen, is associated in my mind with the New Left of the 1960s. He is, in any case, the founder of an influential academic school, World System Theory. More recently he has been a presence in the major event of the newest left, the World Social Forum. According to my recollection, which may be faulty, Wallerstein is of Belgian Jewish origin. Like Boa Santos (author of a recent posting here), Wallerstein is long identified with…Continue

Boa Santos is well known to me as a leading Portuguese academic/activist of the newest Left internationally, who also has shown interest in labour and internationalism. His proposal to abolish Israel as a Jewish state goes further than - or possibly spells out - the one-state solution implied by the BDS (Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions) campaign. The strategy he proposes adds to the present armoury of the Palestine solidarity and BDS campaigns,…Continue

I just found a video of the 2010 action in Oakland, which was the first time an Israeli ship was boycotted for 24 hours in Oakland. Besides being interesting in and of itself, this also features material from the 1984 ILWU (International Longshore and Warehouse Union) boycott of the Nedloyd Kimberly, a Dutch ship carrying cargo to South Africa. (I helped build community support for the ILWU boycott, which lasted for 11 days, before a Federal Court lowered the hammer,…Continue

Activists in Oakland--looks like I was a little high with a 5,000-10,000 estimate for Saturday, but now seems like 3,000-5,000--mobilized to block an Israeli ship on Saturday, August 16, and I was present. March was quite spirited, and had large international consciousness: tying Gaza with South Africa, Haiti, the Philippines, and Ferguson, Missouri, USA. What was especially exciting was the participation of many young people--this wasn't your "gray hairs" of the Vietnam generation,…Continue
