International: IUF, Palestine and Hongkong: Double Standards?

Peter sez:

Just received and signed an International Union of Foodworkers (IUF) online appeal for solidarity with the Hongkong union confederation and a foodworkers' union in their struggle against the Chinese state and for Liberal Democracy in the territory (see below).

Can't help contrasting this with the IUF's appeal in the case of the Israeli war on Gaza (for which see further below).

Note that there is here…

USA: The Crucial Role of Labour (internationally?) in the Pro-Palestinian BDS Movement

Peter sez:

An impressive account of the crucial role one part of US labour is playing in the Solidarity with Palestine movement, which has implications for the role international labour (particularly dock and port labour) could play. This has to do with the dependence of a globalised and informatised capitalism on the logisitics…

ILWU workers boycott another Israeli ship in Oakland, September 27, 2014

Folks--

Just got a video tape from the Labor Video Project of San Francisco about the successful boycott yesterday of a Zim line ship in Oakland.  Very interesting video, as many people on the picket line were interviewed, so you get a wide range of voices of people supporting the boycott.  Perhaps most eloquent was the last interviewee, Jack Heyman, a retired longshore worker.  Heyman also participated in the 1984 boycott of a Dutch ship, the Nedloyd Kimberly, that was transporting…

Peter sez:

Before any inter/national trade union approves of the latest US-Promoted bombing of any Islamic 'heart of darkness', I would like to hope they read this piece first.

Italy: For a European Social Strike, November 14, 2014!

Peter sez:

I am delighted to see this initiative in so far as a social (rather than a labour-only) strike takes further the idea of 'social movement unionism' or the 'new social unionism' I launched in the later 1980s. In other words it goes right 'outside the factory walls and the union office', which is where waged-workers, the precarious, the carers, the unemployed are also exploited, alienated (from past powers or future possibilities). On the other hand,…

PeterW: Why I've Signed this Campaign whilst Rejecting both the Purpose and the Means

Peter spells out this title:

As loyal readers might be aware I am opposed to the Decent Work campaign because 1) it assumes the existence of Decent Capitalists and/or Decent States to enforce it, 2) because it does not challenge the products/output or the labour process concerned, and 3) there is no evidence that precarious workers, or any networks thereof, support it. I favour Useful Work, believing with the early labour movement internationally that waged…

USA: Labour Could (Should?) be Part of the Open Source Revolution

Peter sez:

Its nice to have one's own thinkings/writings/aspirations confirmed by a former CIA agent! It is challenging to see them spelled out with such sophistication and in such detail. Great to see he hasn't forgotten the role of trade unions. However, it seems to me that insofar as the traditional trade unions (like much of the NGO community), itself reproduces the hierarchy, secrecy, particularistic and tunnel vision of the hegemons. He does seem to…

Norway/USA: 10 Points on Unions and Climate Change

Peter sez:

That's a brief and provocative statement on the matter, from an inter/national union activist/officer who has a record of work on the issue. Or should that be The Issue - bearing in mind that if we have no earth any more we have also no unions any more? But I am no specialist on unions and climate change and there are various union bodies and specialists with various policies on this truly vital issue. So I think we really need an overview of the…
