Philippines: Overhaul Marcos’ Labor Code, end ‘martial law’ in the labor front

APL STATEMENT ON THE 39TH ANNIVERSARY OF MARTIAL LAW

ALMOST 40 years after Ferdinand Marcos imposed martial law, a lot of its offshoots have remained entrenched in the fabric of Philippine society, although many of the recent generations may be unaware of them or those who knew have opted to forget them. However, a section of those who knew – either those who directly endured the dictatorship or have been told about it – must remain steadfast in…

Justice for Dusit Hotel Workers! Reverse the "Hey Bald-head You're Fired!" doctrine of the Velasco decision!

While we are supposed to be a democratic society, our constitutional right to freedom of expression and association in the context of labor relations is being eroded by the decision of Justice Presbitero Velasco of the Philippine Supreme Court. Not only it is anomalous but also unconstitutional. Support the quest for justice of the 90 Dusit Hotel workers. Important article: "Venezuela's Social-based Democratic Model" by Steve Ellner

Folks--

Steve Ellner, whose work I've been reading for years and with whom I've had extensive personal e-mail contact with, has written an extremely important article that, I believe, deserves to be read by all people interested in qualitative social change, and not just for those interested specifically in Venezuela.  The URL is www.zcommunications.org/contents/18150/print .

Ellner, born in the US, lives and…

Local authority admin’ are directly accountable and answerable to the electorate via their line management structure, as are those teachers etc. still employed by local authority.  If teachers and non-teaching staff are transferred to academies they are not.  Leicester Mercury stated "Academies are independent from the local authority, and get their money direct from the government.  They can set their…

The Ideology of Fascism

I've just been reading up on Wikipedia about "Fascism and Ideology" the first paragraph really sums up the present political situation, it basically points out "Benito Mussolini had a strong attachment to the works of Plato. In The Republic (c. 380 BC), Plato advocated a system of elite minority rule by highly educated, intellectual rulers called philosopher kings, who were allowed to exercise total control over the politics and security of a…
