Our Mission

The Research Institute for Alternative Workers Movements was established in 2010 to contribute to the revitalization of the workers’ movement in South Korea and beyond. Through empirical and theoretical study and dialogue with workers themselves, we are working to critically analyze the conditions workers face amidst the structural crisis of capitalism, and develop concrete policy for a workers movement that both improves workers' lives and strives towards an alternative political-economic system. Central to our work is the concept of social movement unionism, which calls for unions and other workers’ organizations to play a leading role in political and social transformation. Social movement unionism also signifies union collaboration with social movement forces and the articulation of the struggle for labor rights with struggles against other forms of structural oppression, including the women’s, anti-war, anti-racist and environmental justice movements. By fostering social movement unionism in South Korea we seek to cultivate the Korean workers movement as part of a worldwide alterglobalization movement. The Research Institute for Alternative Workers Movements is affiliated to the social movement organization People’s Solidarity for Social Progress, founded in 1998.

Of course there are great positives about these uprisings. It is clearing the cobwebs from the minds of a lot of Mid east workers. It is raising the question of our class wielding power in the future and it gives a great morale boost internationally to  working class that needs hope. I find it very exciting and many workers at my job have discussed it with me.

Hi Wol-san

The petition will be sent to the email address,s when the petition is closed off . We are able to add addition email address, s to this petition it would be good if you could source another email address,s for Daewoo South Korea. Have you given any thought to sending this petition to GM in the US? We think this would be useful.

I am sure the petition could be mailed the only problem the comment post by those who have signed will not show. We would be interested in your thoughts.

In unity

I have not written much about the UAW, though many articles have been written by comrades in Chicago and the Detroit area of the Mid-West region where auto was traditionally the largest industry. I would suggest you use an internet cafe to access www.plp.org. Check the archives. We have been organizing in auto for 40 years and have a long history of fighting racism on the job and the working class communities where black and Latin super-exploited workers are often the victims of police brutality and murder.
My own experience at my hospital job was exposing racist medical care at my institution that led to the death of a co-worker. That occurred in my first year at work. The union was not involved in that struggle which was my error. I have raised the issues of some black victims of police murder. Last year a mentally ill youth was shot down by the police in the area of my hospital and dragged into the police car and deposited in the emergency room of my hospital like he was a dog. My party has organized consistently to fight these attacks through our work in the unions and our teachers with an alliance with students and parents. This work has led to the recruitment of many working class youth, some of their parents ,as well as fellow teachers. WE have gotten the union to pass several resolutions condemning these murders and supporting a march 2 years ago. But on the whole the unions leadership does NOT want to confront the state over this nor do they wish to fight the hospital bosses. They believe in class collaboration . They call it a "partnership with management". This "partnership" has led to the loss of thousands of jobs , the loss of wages, and some benefits. I am a union delegate .My main task is to develop closer ties off the job with my co-workers so that they develop a trust for communist ideology.

sadly i wont be able to make the tuesday workshop as i only arrive in Seoul in the afternoon on that day. Please keep a record of the discussion and maybe write a report on unionbook of the outcomes. It is so important that we find effective modes of resistance to the restructuring process of global corporations (which they tell us is unstoppable/inevitalbe) as they destroy lives, communities and the environment. SIGTUR is determined to build a response, rob

Liem,

wonderful to make contact. I will be arriving in Seoul on the 9th of nov (tuesday). I am very much looking forward to coming - always inspiring. Perhaps we could meet and discuss our plans. KCTU will know the details of where i am staying and i will be involved in the events they are planning. to make these networks operate effectively we have to have many persons promoting. its all about globalizing the local within the geography of these corporations - quite a challenge, but we can do it. also send me you email address. mine is, rob.lambert@uwa.edu.au lets intensify the struggle through small steps foward into a new arena, a new mode of organizing and resisting. finally, tell me more of your research work. i have always tried to combine intellectual labour and concrete struggle. rob
