About Steve

I have been working as a journalist for over 20 years. It wasn’t something that I set out to become but happened via a youthful involvement in political campaigning.

As a teenager in the 1980s I was a political activist, involved in – among other things – the anti-fascist movement. My first job was as an elected area convenor for the National Union of Students before I went on to work for the anti-fascist organisation Searchlight, where I trained as a journalist on their monthly magazine.

At Searchlight I was involved in many investigations into the far-right over the years and became editor of the magazine. I have had articles published in numerous publications, including the New York Times and London’s Time Out magazine. I have worked as a researcher on several television and radio documentaries.

I have been a member of the National Union of Journalists since 1989.

I have spoken at countless meetings across Britain and also in Europe and the United States on the topics of racism, fascism and antisemitism. I have also given written and oral evidence to two Parliamentary inquiries into racism and antisemitism. The most recent was the 2006 All-Party Parliamentary Inquiry into Antisemitism in the UK.

In total I spent nearly 20 years involved in one way or another with Searchlight. Since 2007 I have been working as a freelance journalist in the voluntary sector. Among other things I have worked for the trade union journal RMT News, and as a website editor for the sports charity StreetGames.

Only recently I wrote a blog post about the racist murder of Kelso Cochrane in 1958 here. I didn’t think that I would be writing on anything similar for some time. Then at the beginning of the week I received an email reminding me that last Monday, 21 February, marks 20 years since the racist murder of Rolan Adams in Thamesmead, South East London.Rolan, and his brother Nathan, were standing at a bus stop…See More

Egypt's Exiled Revolutionary

Watching events unfold as protesters attempt to unseat Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak I am reminded of the country's rich revolutionary history and the suppression of the communist movement there. Many Egyptian communists were effectively expelled from the country in the early 1950s. Their leader, Henri Curiel, carried on working against colonialism from exile in France, forming a unique organisation, and putting his supporters in the service of anti-imperialist and anti-fascist struggles…See More

Hi, Steve, were you influenced by my little piece on Histadrut or by my blog more generally.

As a matter of interest, I am also a great admirer or Curiel, though one has to recognise the many ironies in his history - some of which you have recorded. You also provide me with some additional references since I have been dependent on the biography (half in English, half in French) and some anecdotal accounts by a younger-generation friend of his, Marie-Aimee Helie Lucas (French/Algerian).

I am amused by the fact that one of the first decisions of his Communist Party was that they should learn Arabic. Less amused by the brutal treatment of him by the French CP.

I wish he had himself had better personal security. But I think the bastards would have got him anyway (probably pieds noirs since he was heavily involved with Algerian independence struggles).

Best,

P

Best,
