It was a collective effort really - careful scouring of the new job descriptions and challenging everything we found. Most of the people who were involved have moved on - as is the way with students. They wanted to insist on grade 5 as the description of what ATs do, but we managed to push it up to grade 6. The downside is that they don't pay lecture attendance any longer in some schools and so people attend unpaid. The fact that we lost over 100 faculty has made for a quite quiet research student workforce - and of course some schools don't hire students at all.

Hi Meredith, I noticed you mentioned campaigns to improve the lot of hourly paid academic staff (did I decode the HPL acronym correctly?) We are of course fighting similar fights here in Australia, including some significant wins for hourly paid (here called "casual" or "sessional") academics, but lots more to do. Job security, pay and workloads are the main issues, with added pressures from the employment supervisor and the PhD supervisor being the same person in many cases... Would appreciate hearing more about what's happening at your end of the globe. Linda

Hi Meredith, thanks for accepting me as a friend on UnionBook. In fact, I am not very active on UB yet. I was introduced to this by Finnish unionist-cum-musician friend Mikko Hakkarainen a few weeks back and I am yet to even post my profile picture, as you can see. By the way, Helen Kidd, the president of the Oxford Universiy Teachers Association is a friend of mine. She is teaching poetry & creative-writing @ Ruskin College. Should you get to meet her, pls say Hi for me.

Thanks Meredith, I appreciate the struggle of mining communities throughout the world and more so the British Empire. Unfortunately Australia still acknowledges the Queen as our Head of State. There was a vote on a Republic back in the 90's, but it was defeated sadly! We are still a bunch of "toadies" when it comes down to it! What do you do for a crust (job)? Do you have May Day over there? Now, that would make a great topic! Cheers Rod.
