Teachers strike in Chicago

Folks--We're in a major battle in Chicago, where 26,000 teachers are taking on the Mayor and the Chicago Public School system.  It's really a fight to preserve public eduction in our city.  Teachers have already been out for three days, and the strike will probably continue at least til next week.  For excellent news about the strike, and the struggles around public education, please check out www.substancenews.net .  The parents of the school children…See More

Solidarity Needed--US West Coast dockworkers

Folks--There is a major battle building at the port of Longview, Washington, USA.  The US Coast Guard is apparently planning to escort a scab ship into the harbor, where EGT, a major grain company is planning to try to load a ship without ILWU (International Longshore and Warehouse Union) labor.  Attached below are details, copies of formal resolutions.  Any help that can be give will be gratefully appreciated, I'm sure.In solidarity--Kim ScipesSOLIDARITYINFOSERVICES SPECIAL EDITION: THE BATTLE…See More

New article on Occupy Movement

Folks--I just published a new article, "Understanding the Occupy Movement:  Some Reflections, Thoughts and Suggestions," on Z Net today (December 30).  It argues that we need to understand this movement on three levels:  mobilization, symbolic and as social power.  Think it might be of fairly wide interest.  It is at www.zcommunications.org/contents/183708/print .See More

Labor activists trying to understand AFL-CIO foreign policy

Last December (2010), I published an article titled "Why Labor Imperialism?  AFL-CIO's Foreign Policy Leaders and the Developing World" in Working USA.  This article theorizes the concept of "labor imperialism":  it has now been made available for free at http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/j.1743-4580.2010.00306.x/pdf . Also, my 2010 book, AFL-CIO's Secret War against Developing Country Workers: …See More
