We’re going to have to get used to being poorer for the next few years if we want Britain to climb out of recession.That’s the message last week from Mervyn King, Governor of the Bank of England. He had the cheek to say that the ongoing squeeze on take-home pay is ‘necessary’. This is untrue. It’s not necessary – but it is benefical for the richest in society, which is presumably what King meant.
