Lindsay - NDP candidate Lyn Edwards is welcoming today’s joint federal-provincial infrastructure funding announcement, which provides almost $24-million in funding for seven projects across Haliburton-Kawartha Lakes-Brock, including more than $10-million for a sportsplex in Fenelon Falls.
“This is the kind of investment that New Democrats have been calling for to kick-start the local economy. I’m glad the Federal and Provincial governments have listened to us,” said Edwards.
“However, this money could have, and should have, flowed much earlier. It would have had it not been for the childish bickering between Dalton McGuinty and Federal Finance Minister Jim Flaherty,” added Edwards, noting that it took nearly two years for the Building Canada funding to reach Ontario municipalities.
“The Ottawa-Queen’s Park blame game clearly caused a delay,” she said.
While welcoming the much-awaited investment, Edwards expressed concern that the Building Canada projects still require a one-third municipal cost-share.
“I worry that in the next phase of this program, small cash-strapped communities just won’t be able to cover one-third of the costs. Rising social service costs are straining already overstretched budgets, potentially putting the breaks on important projects,” she said.
“Funding these projects helps to create and sustain jobs. That’s why the NDP’s five-point jobs plan stresses this kind of investment. If the McGuinty government is serious about sustaining jobs in our community, they would cover municipalities’ one-third cost share for future projects.”
