World Aids Day - 1st December 2009

November 25, 2009 by Dave Plummer   Comments (1)

Next Tuesday is World Aids Day, a day for raising awareness of, and fundraising for, HIV/Aids.

33 million people worldwide live with HIV, 80,000 of them in the UK, 2 million more are diagnosed each year and approximately 2 million die of AIDS related illnesses annually.

Being a disease largely passed on through ignorance or carelessness the most effective way to stop HIV/AIDS is through education and awareness. The latest figures indicate that new HIV infections have fallen worldwide by 17%. This is fantastic news and shows how well education can work.

If you can, try to get your branch to do something for World Aids Day. Pop a few leaflets around, sell a few red ribbons, put up some posters. All are available from the Terrence Higgins Trust, at pretty short notice (I grabbed some this very afternoon!)

The battle against HIV is a winnable one. Please help humanity win it.

Would you care to repeat that in English?

There has for quite some time been a problem with jargon creeping in to the Civil Service. Initially this was merely a case of dumbing down, the most obvious example being the irksome use of ‘joined-up’ in place of ‘co-ordinated’.

Pacesetter has upped the stakes and brought a whole new world of lexicographic lunacy to HMRC.

While it is possible that the new jargon is merely the result of indoctrination by consultant I find it hard to believe that anybody could say these things with any expectation of being taken seriously. This stuff makes Scientology seem sane.

Yet these terms are uttered with a straight face.

There must be something deeper at work here. There has to be a hidden agenda.

Here I shall endeavor to decipher the dark purpose behind three examples of this vexatious vocabulary.

The following is written in a personal capacity.

I am in awe of HMRC’s Estates & Support Services (ESS) senior management. They have managed to do something that trade unionists strive for. They’ve broken down barriers, instilled a sense of camaraderie and brought solidarity in a most unexpected way.
