On Wednesday 15 September the UK TUC conference voted to support the campaign for a million climate jobs. The UK trade union group of the Campaign Against Climate Change have set up a new website to campaign for this.

Labor needs to remake the world to spot the head long drive of profit to drink up and commodify every drop of oil and gas on the planet. 350 ppm of CO2 is now a distant dream visible only in the rear view mirror. The seizure of the means of production, the seziure of all finance capital and the immediate implementation of a planned economy under democratic workers control is the only possible way to turn back the clock. And even with that it may be too late. Socialism was intended as a method of sharing the increasing wealth of society provided by the advance of the forces of production. But today we have to consider that the forces of production need to be restructured and that may require the construction of socialism under condtions of declining forces of production. The cry of Rosa Luxemberg Socialism or Barbarism is upon us. It is time to move beyond reform and seize the power.

Don, that's an interesting link - and also the one to the Climate Connectors website. Sadly I am working in London this week so can't get to the Manchester conference and fringe meeting. I'll see if I can get someone else to post a reportback here.

I am looking forward to some feedback on the Fringe Event at the TUC> A very important discussion.

An Australian manufacturing union sets out the need for green manufacturing to be at the centre of a Just Transition to a green economy: http://www.amwu.org.au/read-article/news-detail/534/Call-to-connect...

Don, I assume your post is ironic. It's true in the UK too that car manufacturing and carbon emissions declined as a direct result of the recession rather than any green plan (though a tax concession actually increased car sales for a bit as part of a bid to restart the economy). It's a genuine problem though - how do we move to a green economy and ensure the bosses don't use it as a way of cutting our jobs, deskilling us and breaking up our communities? My own union (Unite) is torn between saving jobs in the car, nuclear, coal and aviation sectors and fighting for green policies. There is a fringe meeting at this year's TUC conference on the campaign for a million green jobs. CCCTU 2010 leaflet A5a.pdf

Click here to see another step forward in the Australian green car plan: http://www.amwu.org.au/read-article/news-detail/562/New-jobs-at-Hol... Towards the end of the story you will see a link to the AMWU's detailed perspective on unions against climate change.

Climate Action Conference coming up in Sydney: http://climateactiveconference.wordpress.com/ Focus is on education and service industries. But we all either work in or are powerfully connected and dependent on these, aren't we?

Yes I totally agree. It should, and can, be a positive change for communities, giving us greater involvement and participation and also a healthier environment.
