Don't let the USA Mission in East Timor get away with sacking a unionist and denying his rights to join and to pursue a grievance. Support him and his union, the General Workers Union of East Timor (Timor-Leste).

i wrote to my MP about this a couple of weeks ago - interesting reply from him stating that Vince Cable could have made this decision himself and not referred it to Ofcom as he already has the power to block any takeover. He is also concerned that all regulators owe there existence to government dictat and if the report they produce is not strongly against the takeover then it gives the coalition justification for not blocking the proposed takeover as Vince Cable will not be obliged to refer it to the competition commission mmm it stinks me thinks!

It went very well Billy and we all missed you in Cardiff. Very productive couple of days.

Thanks Trish I almost missed that but it's done now. Hope the ULR workshop was a great success, sorry I couldn't be there but all's well now.

Well said Bill. The link also has a facility to email your MP to raise these concerns too. The right wing press are busy covering the x factor and the royal 'pantomime' while real anger is spreading throughout the country which they choose to ignore.

Thanks for the link Lee. We can already see what the dumbing down of programmes, due to too much air time offering trash TV and rolling 24 hour news, is doing. Much of it creates the need to embellish stories with untruths to fill schedules. Once this has deadened the individuals’ ability to think; individuals like Murdoch can then push his political agenda which is damaging for democracy in our country. This Thatcherite must be stopped.

MURDOCH!!!???

Hello comrades - sorry haven't been very active on unionbook lately - hope everyone's okay.

I know there are a number of UK comrades on this group. Could you please consider having a look at the link below please which has been forwarded to me by my CLP.

I did have a quick look to see if this has been publicised on U B elsewhere but couldn't see anything - sorry if I missed it!

Cheers,

Lee

More than 13,000 people have added messages telling Ofcom to stop Murdoch's media power grab.

People are working together on this because we all know that more power for Murdoch is bad news for Britain. We know he'll use that power to push his own agenda - whether it's backing right-wing politicians, talking up climate change deniers or spreading the kind of lies that led to the invasion of Iraq. More power for Murdoch means less choice and less democracy for the rest of us.

Delivery of thousands of messages to Ofcom will take place this Friday morning (26th November 2010).

When we phoned to let them know we'd be turning up, Ofcom were stunned to hear how many responses we already had. If by Friday we have 20,000 messages to hand in, they won't have seen anything like it before! They will then feel under massive pressure to hold a proper inquiry into Murdoch's power.

It's incredibly quick and easy to add your comments.

Thanks for being involved!

good article, and totally agree with the first 2 sentences"The Internet is no substitute for person-to-person organizing. But it is a tool that can be used by activists."

There is a place for "Armchair activism" but so many organisations now do it it has lost some of its "power". The internet and the numerous tools available MUST be used to take our messages from the noticeboard to the Net. Cyberspace must be seen as a new battlefield for mobilisation.

I did a piece of research earlier in the year about how trade union activists understand/interpret the word "Organising" and came up with so many differences I was surprised. It means something different to everyone.

When I hear the word "Organising" I think "Mobilisation" and am currently in the process of developing a course/tool on "Multi Media Mobilisation" on just this very subject.

Here is a link http://www.yesmagazine.org/people-power/organizing-in-the-internet-age to a good article on the internet and organising. A good and genuine attempt to define "organising" and distinguish it from "activism". Relevance to union organising? I think so but we should discuss it.

We could all take a closer look at this course: a course for the rich on how to be rich - http://www.businessspectator.com.au/bs.nsf/Article/RICH-PICKINGS-In...
