UnionBook

The social network for trade unionists - a LabourStart project.

First day using the new UB and a couple of observations:

Apps, which are a big part of the way people use facebook, seem difficult to integrate into my UB page. I can have apps appear in a separate page, but really what I want is to have the apps integrated into my primary page - is there a way of making that happen? To be honest at the moment, the apps are ugly, and aren't much of a feature.

Is there a 'techies group' on UB for discussion and collaboration on making improvements to UB, or writing new apps? I didn't see one in the groups list, but I'd happily volunteer to participate. Some links to the ning community would be good - I've not had anything to do with ning before, so some resources for learning to use the ning API and so on would be helpful.

Sorry I didn't reply sooner to this - and thanks for joining UB, Nick. They've made some changes in the ways apps are handled and you can read more about this on the Ning site. What we basically need from techies here is to monitor what's happening on Ning generally, and to pressure them to make changes we need (such as allowing individuals to set their own languages, as Facebook does). If you want to set up a techies group, I'll join.

A theme for feature suggestions: collaboration software with a union branch twist, such that eventually a branch might not need its own software: most of the work could be handled on union book.

Idea #0

Membership management for a small branch could be the same as joining a group on the book.
I've just realised this is a precursor for the next idea.

Idea # 1

Voting mechanism with one vote per member who states they have read the accounts and are paid-up.

Possibly integrating the sites
http://www1.sztaki.hu/servlets/voting
http://ballotbin.com
http://Votefair.org or their ranking system for dependent votes.
I'm not offering to do this coding work, and don't know if it's easier to start from scratch of somehow integrate the use of these sites.

Idea # 2

System to display balance of certain bank accounts and any other info that can be retrieved. Perhaps there's a way to integrate with one of the US account aggregation services that can send an email when there is any change in an account. The email could then be displayed in some adaptation of forum software. A few links about account aggregators are here -

I'm working on this for a small society but maybe it can be made do-able for any branch secretary.

Just a thought. Hope lots of volunteer coders get in touch offering to do the work!
