Recently, CPD has focused on building solidarity with the Greek popular struggle against draconian austerity. In July CPD Co-Directors Joanne and Tom went to Greece, where we met with activists and leaders from left-wing political parties and organizations. Our article, “The Greek Grassroots Challenge to the Politics of Austerity,” described the desperate conditions we observed and the inspiring movements of radicalism and resistance that have emerged there. We are deeply grateful to everyone who gave special contributions that made the trip possible.

       We promised our Greek friends that we would do all we could to enlist people in the U.S. and elsewhere in support of their critical struggle. Our sign-on statement "We Stand with the Greek People Fighting Austerity -- For Their Sak... has been circulated widely and signed by hundreds; it was published as an ad in The Nation and The Progressive and was translated into Greek and publicized in Greece. It’s also been translated into Spanish, Italian, French and Czech.

       One of the most alarming developments in Greece has been the emergence of the neo-Nazi Golden Dawn, which has gained strength as the country’s economic situation has deteriorated. GD thugs have violently attacked immigrants and menaced gays and leftists. When it tried to open an office in New York City, CPD joined with Greek and U.S. organizations in a public campaign to expose the Golden Dawn for what it is, and to make it clear that they are not welcome here.

       In October CPD organized a public forum in New York City, "The Political and Humanitarian Crisis in Greece," featuring Dr. Alexis Benos from the leading left-wing Greek political party SYRIZA, with discussants Marina Sitrin, Costas Panayotakis and Dr. Matthew Anderson. In November we joined with Aristeri Kinisi NY (Greek American Left Movement) and others to organize a rally at the United Nations in solidarity with the general strike against austerity in Greece and the EU, and to oppose the Greek government's human rights violations and protection of Golden Dawn.

I am writing out of concern over the recent treatment of Shop Steward Nick Driedger, who has recently been dismissed. It is my understanding that Mr Nick Driedger advances the welfare and safety of his fellow workers in this role. It is hard to believe that someone as honest, positive, and hard working as Nick should be dismissed, especially in light of the charge discussed below.
Mr Nick Driedger has been accused of stunting, a charge of which hehas not been found guilty. According to eyewitness testimony, he was merely honking his horn, which could only make him more visible as he drove through an area with many police and protestors. Also, according to eyewitnesses, he ceased after hearing shouting from the officers in question. The eyewitness testimony in his favour is substantial, and it is disturbing that Canada Post Corporation would find Nick Driedger guilty in advance of the verdict of a court of law.

I, ______ request that Nick Driedger be reinstated as a full time mail service courier with no harm to his seniority. I also request the cessation of any targeting of him due to his activities as a CUPW shop steward.

Luis Baucage’s five-month old son is too young to understand Christmas or Santa, but it doesn’t make it any easier for Baucage to know that he cannot shower his family with gifts this coming Christmas. Baucage is one of the 42 art handlers Sotheby’s kicked out in the streets when the auction house locked them out in late July.  December will mark five months without a paycheck for Baucage and his fellow art handlers. To make matters worse, their health insurance will expire at the start of the New Year. Tell Sotheby's to stop being a Scrooge and end the lock-out before ... Working Americans everywhere deserve health care and job security, but companies like Sotheby’s want to milk the middle class for cheap labor. With a flood of signatures, we’ll put pressure on Sotheby’s to do the right thing and end the lockout before these art handlers lose their health care. On July 29, Sotheby’s locked out its art handlers, and demanded to reduce their hours, cut their overtime and replace union positions with temporary ones. The proposal came in the midst of the company’s most profitable quarter in its 267-year history.  Sotheby’s continues to break sales records and has even given its CEO, William Ruprecht a $3 million raise, when the total cost of the art handlers’ proposed contract is $3.3 million. Please add your name to the petition asking Sotheby’s to end the lock-out before January 1 so Baucage and his fellow art handlers can get back to work and provide a good living and health care for their families.  Help save Christmas for Sotheby's art handlers.
