The food and retail worker strikes on Friday in Detroit were unbelievable.

Workers from more than 60 stores and restaurants struck -- at least five of them had to close their doors because too many workers walked off the job.

Get this: A McDonalds brought in replacement workers who showed up to the store, realized they were there to replace the striking workers, and CHOSE TO JOIN THE STRIKERS, TOO.

One worker even CRAWLED OUT A DRIVE-THRU WINDOW to get to her picket line.

That’s what’s happening out there, people. It’s big. And getting bigger.

What began in New York and Chicago expanded to St. Louis and Detroit last week, with the biggest strike yet.  Workers are standing up for their families and refusing to be silenced.

We can’t let them strike alone -- it’s time for us to stand with these brave workers.  Add your name to show you’re supporting the striking workers in Detroit -- and then pass this along to five friends right now.

Just this morning, St. Louis fast food workers walked off of their jobs because they can't survive on $7.35 an hour. These brave workers are standing up to the huge corporations they work for to demand a living wage and the respect they deserve. They were inspired by the strikes in New York and Chicago last month, and the support they've been getting from across the country. They need everyone who supports them — no matter where you live — to stand in solidarity with them TODAY. See below and add your name in support here.

May Day 2013, the international workers' holiday.

  • In Greece, a general strike by workers protesting against the highest unemployment levels in Europe has shut down much of the country's transport system.

"Where is the world to save us from torture? Where is the world to save us from the fire and sadness? Where is the world to save the hunger strikers?"

Adnan Latif, Yemeni Guantanamo prisoner held for ten years without ever having been charged with a crime and cleared for release on four separate occasions, found dead in his cell on September 8, 2012.

As the hunger strike in Guantanamo escalates, so must our response.  We write to give an update on the activities of Witness Against Torture and allies, and to invite you to participate in whatever way you can.

In this e-mail you will find information on:

SAVE SHAKER – MONDAY APRIL 29 GLOBAL DAY OF FASTING

Our friends at Save Shaker are calling on all people of conscience around the world to fast Monday 29 April 2013 in solidarity with Shaker Aamer and the other detainees on hunger strike in Guantanamo Bay.  You can sign-up and find more information on the Save Shaker Website.  If you are in NYC, we will gather for a vigil in Times Square from 4-5:30pm on Monday.

WITNESS AGAINST TORTURE ROLLING FAST

Give up food for a day as part of Witness Against Torture’s ROLLING FAST.  Over 200 people have participated by fasting for some period of time since the Guantanamo Hunger Strike began.  Sign up for one day, or more.

PHONE CALLS & LETTER WRITING

We have generated over 500 calls since the Hunger Strike began.  We are particularly focusing on calls to the U.S. Southern Command (where you will be able to speak to a person), but ask folks to call all of the numbers here:  Call the White House (202-456-1111, 202-456-1414), U.S. Southern Command (305-437-1213) and Department of Defense (703-571-3343) to express concern over the hunger strike and insist on Guantanamo’s closing.

The Men in Guantanamo know of our efforts in response to their hunger strike and indefinite detention.  Download and send this letter to a man detained in Guantánamo.

VIGILS (DC, CHICAGO, NY)

Communities in Washington, DC, Chicago, and NY have been holding regular vigils focused on Guantanamo.  In DC, there is a vigil each Friday at the White House from 12-1pm.  Col. Morris Davis, former chief prosecutor at Guantanamo, will speak at this Friday’s vigil.  In Chicago, there is a vigil every Friday, 4:30pm at State & Jackson.  And the next NYC vigil will be on Monday, April 29, 4-5:30pm in Times Square.  For more information on vigils (or to let us know about a vigil you are planning), contact witnesstorture@gmail.com

CONGRESSIONAL OUTREACH

We have begun to reach out to members of Congress to push for movement towards Guantanamo’s closure.  Resources to use in your own lobbying will be available soon.  Please call or e-mail your elected officials to express concern over what is happening at Guantanamo, and highlight Sen. Diane Feinstein’s letter urging the Obama Administration to transfer cleared Guantanamo prisoners.

SAVE THE DATE / UPCOMING EVENTS

May 17 will mark the Day 100 of the Guantanamo Hunger Strike.  We are working in a coalition with many other groups and will be announcing plans for May 17 / 18 very soon.  We are also working with Change.org on a petition authored by Col. Morris Davis (former chief prosecutor at Guantanamo) that we will be asking folks to sign and circulate.

Ten days ago, Hong Kong's dock workers voted to strike in a last-ditch attempt to bring management to the table to discuss health and safety, pay parity and other workplace issues.
Management's response was to bring a court injunction barring a full scale strike.
The International Transport Workers Federation has called for a massive global online campaign in defense of the dockers' right to strike, which we consider a basic human right.
Thank you. And please spread the word!

A few hours ago, I joined hundreds of minimum-wage fast food and retail workers in Chicago and went on strike.
What we're asking for is simple and fair: $15 an hour and the right to form a union without intimidation.
Like the Walmart workers who went on strike on Black Friday, and the New York fast food workers who walked off the job soon after, we're standing up to huge companies like Macy's, McDonald's, Wendy's and Victoria's Secret, many of which are raking in huge profits.
These companies can afford to pay their workers enough to cover the most basic needs like food, rent, healthcare and transportation.
Paying fast food and retail workers a fair wage and giving us a right to organize without indimidation will not only improve our lives, it will improve Chicago’s economy by giving us the ability to buy the goods and services we need. Today is a huge and exciting step in the right direction.

P.S.: Please forward this email on to 3 friends of yours who also stand with Chicago workers. Together, we can make a living wage a reality for all workers.
