Stem cell CURES are coming. According to one of the key researchers, it's no longer a matter of science but of financing. As the key group who fought for universal health care, the labour movement has a role to play in stem cells.

I liked your last post - the one sent out by e-mail. It reminded me of something Chomsky said about how people shouldn't fear big government - as it's the only chance they have to have a say. And it gels with my personal dislike of philanthropists like Gates... and growing distrust of NGOs.

How about the literal version of unionizing? Like in terms of unionizing scientists or folks in bigpharma?

What role can the labour movement play in the stem cell debates. I'm putting forward what I think and I'd like to hear other users' opinions. Because stem cell CURES will have such a massive impact on society, I think it's necessary that:
1. The research is democratized. Citizens need to know what is going on and how close a cure is for each chronic illness.
2. The ownership needs to be democratized. Currently many government grants for research are going to private companies. Who will own these new CURES. We have to make sure that private corporations do not hold the CURE over our heads and make us pay whatever they demand.
3. The CURE needs to be democratized. It needs to be made available to all anywhere in the world. We cannot allow such a world changing therapy to be used only in the developed world with the sick of the poor nations looking on.
I want to hear more, and especially in what way the labour movement can play a role.
