King Coal’s connections at the Department of the Interior (DOI) are paying off. In a big way.

A federal coal leasing program run by DOI has resulted in almost $30 billion in government handouts to the coal industry. The giveaway happens through noncompetitive “auctions” where the Department sells the rights to publicly-owned coal for a fraction of what it’s worth.
And there’s almost four billion more tons of this coal, primarily in the Powder River Basin, that DOI could give away in the coming years. Though it’s not a done deal. With newly confirmed Interior Secretary Sally Jewell taking over the Department, there’s hope.
Secretary Jewell has the power to put an end to these coal industry handouts for good. But she’s going to have to hear from the public first. Together we can make a strong impression during her first day on the job.

What’s worse is that the publicly-owned coal that DOI is giving away isn’t even destined for use in the United States.
With demand falling dramatically in this country, coal companies like Peabody are hoping to boost profits by exporting the dirty coal overseas and selling it in places like China – where it will be burned and continue to add global warming pollution to the atmosphere.

It’s hard to see how this is in the nation’s best interest. Which is why it’s no surprise that DOI is under three separate investigations for the program.

An ExxonMobil pipeline spewed tens of thousands of barrels of tar sands oil last week, covering an Arkansas town with toxic crude. Now it's refusing to share information that could protect the people affected. Tell ExxonMobil to release all the information about the spill.

This past weekend, an ExxonMobil pipeline carrying nearly 100,000 barrels of toxic tar sands crude spewed into Mayflower, Arkansas. Yards are flooded in black crude, a river of toxic oil flows down the street, and the nearby fishing lake is covered in black grease. Families have been evacuated, but nobody knows what the dangers to the community are, or even how much oil has been spilled. Why? Because Exxon’s not talking.

Let’s hold ExxonMobil accountable for this spill by demanding it release all the information on this spill -- the good, the bad, and the ugly -- while the images of play sets and driveways overrun with crude oil are still in the public eye.

When I started working at Juicy Couture's flagship store in New York City, I regularly worked 40 hours a week. But then Juicy Couture figured out that it was cheaper to force workers to be part-time, so they could deny us healthcare and paid time off.

For almost four years, I stocked Juicy's shelves with $200 jeans and sweaters, and watched as the company pushed out full time workers, or cut our hours.

My own hours were slashed from 40 hours a week to just 14 hours a week, definitely not enough to support my family. When I asked for more hours, they said they couldn't give them to me because I didn't have open availability – because of my daughter.

Now it looks like my situation is going to be the rule, not the exception. Juicy Couture is capping part-time employees at the flagship store at just 21 hours a week so they don't have to give us healthcare under the Affordable Care Act.
My coworker Darrell and I started a petition on Coworker.org demanding that Juicy Couture stop eliminating full-time positions and slashing hours to avoid paying benefits. Will you click here to sign?

What happens here is really important, because if Juicy Couture can get away with this at its flagship store in New York City, it may start doing the same things to workers at stores all over America.

The good news is we have reason to believe Juicy Couture will be responsive to public pressure – just a couple of months ago, the company that owns The Olive Garden dropped these same awful policies to deny workers healthcare after massive customer blowback. I know that if enough people sign Darrell's and my petition, Juicy Couture will back down, and give us #JustHours too.

CVS Caremark Pharmacies: Stop requiring employees to turn over thei...  CVS Caremark has announced that they will require employees to disclose their weight, height, body fat and blood pressure, or else pay a $600 annual penalty for "health coverage." No other healthcare information is required, such as whether employees are drinkers, drug users, or any other health issue that can be argued is a choice.

Switching to a chained-CPI calculation for Social Security cost of living adjustments "would immediately begin to cut benefits and would continue to do so year after year," economist Dean Baker points out.
We've got to be absolutely clear with members of Congress. Voting for such a change would be an unforgivable assault on Social Security. As Baker explains: "For an average worker retiring at the age of 65, this would amount to a cut of $650 a year by age 75. At age 85, this would be a cut of $1,130 a year."
Send an unambiguous message to your representative and senators: If you vote to cut Social Security or Medicare benefits, I will oppose your re-election.

Ahmad Abdulghani Awad Abdulghani, 26 years old, worked at Cadbury Egypt, now a wholly-owned subsidiary of Mondelez, from 2008 to December 2011. He never had a permanent job, but was part of the army of precarious workers making chewing gum at the Alexandria factory. He lost half his thumb while operating a machine which should normally be run by three persons. Then he lost his job.
This is the same factory management that sacked 5 union leaders in June 2012 following a spontaneous protest over the company's refusal to pay a government-mandated private-sector pay rise.
This is the same company whose management in Tunisia has dismissed and suspended union leaders and denies responsibility for these abuses.
This is the company whose corporate management refuses to respond to communications to the IUF. The IUF has therefore filed a formal complaint for violations of international human rights standards with the relevant US government agency - and has launched a GLOBAL CAMPAIGN in defense of its members at Mondelez in Egypt and Tunisia.
