Shell began 2012 by stating that they were ready to drill for oil in America’s Arctic Ocean. On New Year’s Eve, Shell’s promises rang false yet again — with an exclamation point to end its series of failures in 2012 – the “Kulluk” drill rig ran aground near Kodiak Island in a ferocious Gulf of Alaska storm. Anyone who has ever watched Deadliest Catch knows how fierce such storms can be – apparently Shell never watched the show.

In 2012, Shell’s failures included:
Losing control of both of its drill rigs – the “Discoverer” slipped an anchor in Dutch Harbor, AK this summer, and just recently the “Kulluk” ran aground near Kodiak Island, AK.
Backtracking on its promises by failing to meet Clean Air Act standards and its stated ability to clean up 95 percent of oil spilled saying instead that it meant it would merely encounter (not recover) 95 percent.
Failing to meet Coast Guard standards for its oil spill response barge, which had four illegal fluid spills while still in port in Washington state and its oil spill containment dome was “crushed like a beer can” during testing in the relatively calm waters there.
Abandoning its drilling site in less than 24 hours when an ice sheet larger than the combined five boroughs of New York City barreled down on its location and at the end of the drilling season, the “Kulluk” got stuck for nearly a week by frigid temperatures and ice trying to leave the Arctic.
This all seems to lead to a very simple New Year’s resolution for President Obama to make: I will not allow Shell to drill in America’s Arctic Ocean. Will you help him make this resolution by signing this petition?

Bob Hurcules

Dr. Billy Taylor

Filmmakers
Bob Hercules and Dan Chace, and Dr.
Billy Taylor
will join us to talk about the new film "Perseverance:
The Story of Dr. Billy Taylor"
that shows at the Siskel Film Center on
January 4 and 5.   There was a time when no college football athlete seemed more
assured of a brilliant future in sports than Billy Taylor when he starred as
Michigan’s running back under coach Bo Schembechler. But two family tragedies
later, Taylor’s life began a downward spiral that led to alcohol, drugs, prison,
and shame, leaving him a derelict on the streets of Detroit until a mysterious
voice called his name. Perseverance is the story of a man’s remarkable
resurrection, and of his mission to help others who have similarly touched
bottom in their lives

Pensions, Pensions, Pensions…

On January 3rd and 4th we will travel to Springfield to support our brothers and sisters facing pension attacks.  As you know, all public employee pension systems are facing unprecedented attacks and we are sending two buses

to Springfield to join our brothers and sisters who depend on their state pensions.  We will join AFSCME, the IFT, the IEA and SEIU to defend our retirement on January 4th.

Please note that our pension—CTPF—is NOT included in this new legislation. As of now, there is NO legislation impacting our pensions, yet.  Although there have been numerous bills filed to deal with the state’s pension systems, there has not been one filed for the Chicago Teachers Pension Fund.   Please visit Chicago Teachers Pension Fund website so that they can sign up to become a pension ambassador.  http://www.ctpf.org/general_info/advocacy.htm
This December a new coalition of Democrats in the state House of Representatives indicated that they were willing to support an unconstitutional "pension reform" bill that could significantly reduce existing and future benefits for members of the state pension systems. We stand in agreement without IFT sisters and brothers and believe that cutting or diminishing benefits to those already retired is a violation of the Illinois Constitution.
Please seriously consider taking a PB day and attending this important lobbying effort.
