Athletes United for Peace was formed by Olympic Athletes after the USA boycott of the Moscow Olympics. Its goal: build friendship, respect and trust through athletic activities. The Heartland Chapter of Athletes United for Peace brings people together to experience the joy of athletic activity in a supportive atmosphere emphasizing friendship, fun, and yes, an element of competition. Our fun runs are highly competitive at the front of the pack, relaxed and joyous at the back!

Week Saturday 1/5/13
Bob Hurcules
Dr. Billy Taylor
Filmmakers
Bob Hercules and Dan Chace, and Dr.
Billy Taylor will join us to talk about the new film "Perseverance:
The Story of Dr. Billy Taylor" that shows at the Siskel Film Center on
January 4 and 5. There was a time when no college football athlete seemed more
assured of a brilliant future in sports than Billy Taylor when he starred as
Michigan’s running back under coach Bo Schembechler. But two family tragedies
later, Taylor’s life began a downward spiral that led to alcohol, drugs, prison,
and shame, leaving him a derelict on the streets of Detroit until a mysterious
voice called his name. Perseverance is the story of a man’s remarkable
resurrection, and of his mission to help others who have similarly touched
bottom in their lives

On January 3rd and 4th we will travel to Springfield to support our brothers and sisters facing pension attacks. As you know, all public employee pension systems are facing unprecedented attacks and we are sending two buses |
to Springfield to join our brothers and sisters who depend on their state pensions. We will join AFSCME, the IFT, the IEA and SEIU to defend our retirement on January 4th.
