Americans in Washington, D.C., and around the country are unemployed, under-employed, under-insured, in debt, even hungry or homeless.
Let's redirect the inaugural ball funding to those who need it.
Since President Obama was re-elected he has gone back on a promise to end tax cuts for the wealthy, made a "fiscal cliff" deal that raised taxes on ordinary people more steeply than on billionaires, set the stage for big cuts to Social Security and/or Medicare by spring, authorized five more years of warantless spying, claimed the power to imprison anyone forever without a trial, and killed dozens of men, women, and children with drones.
Is this the time to spend hundreds of millions of dollars CELEBRATING?
While veterans huddle over steam vents to keep warm on the streets of Washington, Obama will attend the Commander in Chief Ball, a tradition begun by George W. Bush. He'll also attend a ball being held in the five rooms that held five different balls last time around. This allows the president to reduce the number of balls he's attending and integrates the dishonest math that dominates budgetary discussions into the inaugural festivities.
Big shots will pay $250,000 for tickets, while corporate persons will pay $1 million each. Numerous institutions will hold dozens of balls, cruises, and parties, wasting enough cash to have saved a great many lives.
The Washington Post reported this week that Afghanistan may have $3 billion under its soil in the form of oil and minerals, and that such wealth could transform that nation. Of course, the United States has wasted more than that waging war for the past 11 years. Military spending by the U.S. government is over $1 trillion per year. We could transform our own society as well if we shifted our priorities.

18,000 Stood Up With Erika

Let's Make It 20,000

I've never seen the country mobilize as quickly as everyone did for Erika Andiola's mother and brother. It's still hard to believe just how close Erika's mother, Maria, was to being deported. Here's how Erika described it :

My mom was on [her] way to Mexico. She said the driver turned around when she received a call. She was really confused, [then] they told her that the reason why she was returning was because her daughter was mobilizing the whole country to get her to come back. The reality is, you all made it happen! My mami is now home because of [you].1

Thanks to almost 18,000 of you, Erika's mother has been granted administrative relief, and her brother has a chance to stay and fight through court system. This is a huge victory.

But Erika, always the fighter, knows this isn't enough. Even though her mother and her brother had their deportations stopped, her family is still in immigration limbo. Even worse, while we've been fighting to stop the deportation of Erika's family, thousands more families were torn apart by our broken immigration system. While we can't stop every single deportation, we can all do more.

That's why Erika wants to take your petition signatures to the offices of Senators John McCain and Jeff Flake, both of whom are going to be key players in immigration talks coming up in the U.S. Senate. Right now, McCain and Flake are using their influence to push for more border security instead seeking relief for Erika's family and the millions like her. Our collective voice can pressure McCain and Flake to change their positions and focus on relief instead of enforcement.

Can you share Erika's petition one last time so that we can bring 20,000 signatures to the offices of Senators John McCain and Jeff Flake?

Or you can send this link to your friends: http://act.presente.org/sign/erika

Labor History with Prof. Emily E. LB. Twarog – $150.00

Wednesdays 6:00–8:00 pm, January 23 to February 20

What does the history of the U.S. look like when viewed from the point of view of those who built the country?  The class reviews working class and labor history since the Civil War, but focuses (with films) on some key labor struggles such as the 1894 Pullman Strike; organizing in the mine and textile industries; the rise of the CIO and the autoworker sit-down strikes; the impact of McCarthyism on the labor movement; and the expansion of public sector unionization (1968 Memphis Sanitation Strike and the 1970 Postal Workers Strike).

National Buzz Banner UPDATE
Dear Friend,
I wanted to share with you a recent op-ed that appeared in the Boston Globe. I remain extremely concerned that fewer and fewer media conglomerates are in control of what the American people see, hear and read. I hope you enjoy this piece.
Sincerely, Bernie Sanders U.S. Senator

The Boston Globe
Stop the Big Media Consolidation Scheme
By Sen. Bernie Sanders
As Americans across the nation were celebrating the holidays, a federal agency was tying a bow on a gift for big media conglomerates. To avoid public scrutiny, the Federal Communications Commission used the holiday lull to propose rule changes that would allow greater media consolidation in big cities. A vote by the FCC could come any day now.
The rule would make a bad situation worse. In 1983, 90 percent of the American media was owned by 50 companies. Today, 90 percent is controlled by just six corporations: General Electric, News Corp., Disney, Viacom, Time Warner, and CBS. Now the FCC is proposing more consolidation. The proposed new rules would let one corporation in the top 20 media markets own a major newspaper, two television stations, and up to eight radio stations, and provide Internet service.
More media consolidation, or what the FCC calls cross-ownership, would result in less local control, fewer outlets offering differing viewpoints, and less ownership diversity..

TAKE ACTION! Protect Northwest Orcas Take action today!

The National Marine Fisheries Service is considering a cynical request to remove protections for the Pacific Northwest's irreplaceable killer whales. Urge the Fisheries Service to reject this misguided effort!

A Cat and Mouse Game

How you can help striking German factory workers with a couple of clicks.

Striking workers at Neupak Verpackungen (Germany) need your support in an email campaign.   They have set up automated emails to send to various religious and activist organizations, corporations and government officials to bring attention to their struggle.  You can help by adding your voice to the campaign.

Go to the Hamburg IWW website

http://www.iww-hamburg.org/

and scroll down the page to the english version of their campaign info.  You will find the links to the emails, along with a complete description and pertinent info,  and you will be able to personalize them as you see fit (recommended).  Thanks for your support!
