Take a minute to help save the life of an Iranian trade unionist facing the death penalty.

Abdolreza Ghanbari.
Many people have reported problems with the link in this mailing - please try again - we've now made a small correction.  If you did successfully send off your message already, ignore this email.

Every campaign we run on LabourStart is important.  But sometimes, these are literally matters of life and death.

A few years ago, we were asked to run an online campaign in support of a jailed Iranian teacher named Farzad Kamangar.  Thousands of you sent off protest messages to Iran, but it was not enough.  On 9 May 2010, Kamangar was executed.  He was 32 years old.

Today we are once again being asked to mobilize tens of thousands of trade unionists around the world in defense of an Iranian teacher who has been sentenced to death.  His name is Abdolreza Ghanbari and the crime he is accused of is "enmity towards God".  The Education International, which represents teachers' trade unions around the world, is demanding his release.

It will take you only a minute to send off your message of protest - please click here to do so.

Please spread the word in your union.  Maybe this time, if we can send enough messages, our voices will be heard.

And to see what recent LabourStart campaigns you may have missed, click here.

Meanwhile, in Turkey, we're being asked by Amnesty International to help support their campaign to grant Turkish workers their fundamental labour rights.  Please take a moment to sign their online petition, here.

And at the same time, Turkish trade union members are staging a sit-in today at the ILO's Turkey office in a bid to force their government to comply with ILO core labour standards and to enact new labour laws that respect workers' rights.  You can follow their sit in -- which they're calling "Occupy ILO" on their blog and on Twitter using the #OccupyILO hashtag.  They're asking all supporters of workers' rights in Turkey to tweet using the #OccupyILO hashtag to show their solidarity with those doing the sit-in.

Thanks very much!

Thanks again for supporting the "BoycottRush.org" movement!  With over 200,000 actions taken, and with more and more advertisers dropping Rush by the day, you have already made an impact that is nothing short of unbelievable.

And speaking of "unbelievable," we need your help on a new front -- stopping the Missouri Legislature from honoring Rush Limbaugh with a bust to be displayed in the Missouri Statehouse.

Here's the mind-blowing news, care of our friends at CREDO:

"...this week, news broke the that Missouri Speaker of the House Steven Tilley approved and commissioned a bust of Rush Limbaugh to go in the Hall of Famous Missourians in the Missouri Statehouse.  Memorializing someone who is leading the war on women would be an affront to all Missourians."

That's right.  After all that's happened, the choice isn't to condemn Limbaugh's actions -- it's to honor him with a Caeser-esque bust to be displayed prominently in the state's top government building.

Tell Speaker Tilley: Respect Missouri's women and stop the commission of the Rush Limbaugh bust for the Missouri Statehouse.

Please take action today, and please fight back against this terrible idea by spreading this to as many friends as possible, and by sharing this on Facebook and Twitter.

Send a message today, and fight back!

--> Click here to share this on Facebook

And remember, keep up the pressure on our 3 other featured Rush actions as well:

1) Tell Rush's Advertisers: "Stop Supporting Anti-Woman Hate Speech!"

Take action, and tell Rush's advertisers to stop supporting anti-woman hate speech!

Enough is enough. It is time for Rush Limbaugh's sponsors to stop supporting his hate speech through their advertising dollars.

Send a message today, and fight back!

--> Click here to share this on Facebook

2) Take action with CREDO against Rush's advertisers
CREDO also has gotten into the fight, and over 50,000 LeftActivists have signed their petition.  Please support that one as well! The more ways we can send messages to Rush's advertisers, the greater the odds those messages will make an impact!

3)  Tell the Republican leaders: "Denounce Rush's Horrible Comments!"

Don't just send a message to his advertisers, send a message to Rush's enablers in the GOP leadership as well.

Tell them it's time for them to denounce his comments in no uncertain terms.

4)  BoycottRush.org

Want an easy way to send messages to Limbaugh's advertisers, and to keep up on who has dropped him?  See the latest updates?

Thanks for your support, and for fighting back!

The White House is assassinating Americans abroad without constitutionally guaranteed due process.

Not even the Bush Administration had the audacity to publicly and explicitly assert the right to execute Americans citizens without judicial review. But in a speech at Northwestern University this week, Attorney General Eric Holder offered a detailed defense of the Obama Administration's unprecedented step of authorizing targeted executions of American citizens through a secretive CIA assassination program

It is unacceptable and unconstitutional for the executive branch of the U.S. government to secretly kill American citizens abroad without due process that includes impartial judicial review.

Tell Attorney General Holder: Release the documents the Obama administration is using to justify its authority to kill American citizens without judicial review. Click here to automatically sign the petition.

Holder asserts that Constitutional guarantees of due process aren't violated by a program that secretly targets American citizens for assassination without "even charging them with a crime, notifying them of the accusations, or affording them an opportunity to respond" through a judicial process.1 Holder made this point clear saying,

"Due process" and "judicial process" are not one and the same, particularly when it comes to national security. The Constitution guarantees due process, not judicial process.2

The ACLU has filed a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit seeking information about the assassination program, but Holder's Justice Department has responded to the request by saying they can neither confirm nor deny the existence of any records. We need to pressure the Department of Justice to release all legal documents related to the purported "justification" of the Obama Administration's extra-judicial killings.

Tell Attorney General Holder: Release the documents the Obama administration is using to justify its authority to kill American citizens without judicial review. Click here to automatically sign the petition.

The "process" Holder referred to in his chilling defense of the secret assassination program entails the President making the ultimate decision to kill an American suspected of terrorism. This decision, according to Reuters, would be based on information in a "kill or capture list" drawn up by "a secretive panel of senior government officials."3

There isn't any law that establishes the existence of this panel and provides rules for how it is supposed to operate. This sham "due process" described by Holder offers "no public record of the operations or decisions of the panel."4 Holder did not provide any "footnotes or specific legal citations" to offer credible justifications of the President's ability to order the killing of just about anyone without judicial review.5 We need to join the ACLU in its call to shine a light on this unconstitutional and un-American secret White House program.

Tell Attorney General Holder: Release the documents the Obama administration is using to justify its authority to kill American citizens without judicial review. Click here to automatically sign the petition.

As pointed out by Hina Shamsi, Director of the American Civil Liberties Union's National Security Project:

If the attorney general can discuss the targeted killing program at a law school, then the administration can surely release the legal memos it uses to justify its claimed killing authority, and also defend its legal justifications in court... The targeted killing program raises profound legal and moral questions that should be subjected to public debate, and constitutional questions that should be considered by the judiciary.6

Just four years ago Holder himself blasted the Bush Administration's justification to eavesdrop on accused terrorists by mocking its calls to "just trust us."7 His frightening advancement of unchecked executive power through justification of a sham due process runs directly counter to then Senator Obama's passionate defense of "the vital importance of due process even for accused terrorists" during the Bush administration.8 As a former professor of Constitutional Law,, President Obama should be especially sensitive to this issue, and should not oppose his Department of Justice allowing a vigorous and honest public debate (not to mention a credible judicial review) of the constitutionality of his assassination program.

Tell Attorney General Holder: Release the documents the Obama administration is using to justify its authority to kill American citizens without judicial review. Click here to automatically sign the petition.

Even if you trust President Obama not to use unconstitutional powers, imagine a President Romney or President Santorum with the authority to secretly order extra-judicial killings of American citizens without being accountable to judicial process. We must take action today.

Sign our petition today and tell Attorney General Holder that he must release all legal documents related to the Administration's unprecedented policy, giving the executive branch unchecked power to carry out extra-judicial executions. Click below to automatically sign the petition:

Happy International Women’s Day! From New York City to Los Angeles, Women Occupy and CODEPINK are holding Bank of America – the biggest of the big banks –  accountable for their predatory economic policies that are destroying U.S. families and communities.

We will be inside and outside the banks dressed as Super Sheros to avenge economic injustice.
Will you join our Justice League and take action? Sign our petition to the Board of Governors at the Federal Reserve and tell them to Bust Up B of A. They have the authority and need to use it before B of A does anymore damage to the US economy.

Bank of America, a member of the “League of Doom,” not only leads the pack in illegal foreclosure practices, faulty loans, and tax evasion, it also pillages customers with exorbitant fees. In addition, as the official bank of the US military, the bank has been accused of improperly foreclosing on
active-duty troops.

Women have long been the prime targets of predatory bank policies and economic collapse.  Women are 32% more likely than men to receive sub‑prime mortgages, and Latina and African-American women borrowers are most likely to receive sub‑prime loans at every income level. It’s time to tell Bank of America that we’re not going to take it anymore!

Since it started in the early 20th century, International Women’s Day has been rooted in the struggle for economic justice, growing out of local demonstrations by women workers demanding shorter hours, better pay, voting rights, and an end to discrimination.

Take action today
. Before it is too late. The country is depending on you.

We are joining with Occupy Wall Street and the women-led campaigns at Rainforest Action Network, The Other 98% and Public Citizen to bust up Bank of America! Join us!

President Obama must fully staff the financial crimes task force.

It's been six weeks since President Obama announced the creation of a new financial crimes task force to investigate the crimes and misdeeds that led to the economic collapse and "hold accountable those who broke the law."

Yet, despite the enormity of the issue, its direct impact on millions of Americans and the widespread nature of crimes and wrongdoing, the new financial crime unit has been given a paltry 55 staff members to undertake this enormous task.1

This contrasts to the approximately 1,000 FBI agents and dozens of federal prosecutors who were assigned to prosecute cases related to the much smaller savings and loan scandal of the '80s2, or the 100 FBI agents tasked with investigating the Enron scandal3, which involved just one company and caused none of the economy-wide damage we've seen since the collapse of the housing bubble.

You have signed the petition, now pick up the phone and call Presid...

President Obama's record on Wall Street accountability is abysmal. But because of enormous grassroots pressure from activists like you and polling that suggests he needs to take on Wall Street as a part of his election campaign, we have a real opportunity to move President Obama to meaningful action on Wall Street accountability.

President Obama's first task force at the Department of Justice did little if anything to prosecute Wall Street for crimes that led to the financial crisis. But because of your activism, he announced a new task force and named progressive champion and New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman one of its five co-chairs.

Now we need to pressure the White House to give that task force the resources it needs to pursue justice. Without sufficient staff to conduct thorough investigations, it's hard to see how this task force could bring indictments quickly.

Call President Obama and tell him that 55 investigators are not eno...

The economic crisis we're in demands a response commensurate with the damage done by Wall Street crooks. But 55 investigators don't even come close to being adequate.

And aside from the appointment of Attorney General Schneiderman, none of the other co-chairs of the new task force has done literally anything that achieves our goal of holding banks accountable or prosecuting bankers for criminal activity.

In fact, three of his co-chairs served on the earlier failed Department of Justice task force that the new investigation was created to supersede.

In an election year when we know the Obama reelection campaign wants to run against Wall Street, President Obama will be particularly sensitive to public perception of whether his efforts to hold Wall Street accountable are meaningful and represent the full force of his office.

But we only have until election day before we lose our leverage. We have until then to ensure that President Obama's gestures towards Wall Street accountability are more than mere sleight of hand that does more to protect Wall Street than to bring justice for the millions of American taxpayers who bailed out the big banks but still haven't seen any accountability for the financial fraud that led to the economic collapse.

Make a call. Tell President Obama: 55 investigators are not enough ...

We want, and our country needs, indictments. The collapse of the housing bubble led directly to the economic crisis we're in. But not one of the Wall Street crooks who drove our economy off a cliff has gone to jail. And without aggressive investigations and prosecution for misconduct, none of them will.

President Obama needs to give the Department of Justice task force the resources required to launch a serious investigation that will bring about real accountability before the statutes of limitations run out for Wall Street's crimes.

He can start by staffing the task force at a bare minimum at the levels of previous financial task forces created to address much smaller scandals.

It's already been more than a month. We can't waste any more time.

Tell President Obama: 55 investigators are not enough to launch a real investigation into Wall Street's crimes. Click the link below for the number to call and a sample script.

Bankruptcy Returns as a Tool to Crack Unions

Labor Notes Logo

Bankruptcy: A Tool To Crack Unions

With $4 billion cash in hand, why did American Airlines declare bankruptcy? Corporations are turning to bankruptcy courts not necessarily because they can't pay their bills, but because they can negotiate with a hammer.

Are Living Wage Laws Worth the Effort?

Activists have won more than 125 living wage ordinances in cities and counties, plus state and federal minimum wage increases. Yet the number of workers earning poverty wages remains as high as ever. Are the laws worth the effort?

Wage Laws Could Include
Homecare Workers, Finally

Two million homecare workers are finally getting a little respect under U.S. labor law. New Labor Department rules extending overtime and minimum wage protections to home health aides and personal care assistants could go into force next month.

Sign up for the conference and learn how to:

Beat Apathy. Is your union's greatest asset going untapped: the members? Learn how to move from isolated grievances and gripes to ongoing organization.

Break Out of the Austerity Box. Hear from public sector unionists across the nation how they are challenging budget cuts and layoffs: the whole austerity framework.

These are just two of nearly 100 sessions in planning. Don't delay:...

Postal Workers Need Support
From the 99%

With service cuts and at least 100,000 layoffs threatened, what's happened to the Postal Service? Congress saddled it with billions of dollars of obligations, an attack that will take an army of activists to undo. Glimmers of hope are on the horizon.

Getting Members Involved
In Occupy's Next Phase

The idea that the 99% can actually stand up to the 1% is contagious. How can stewards build on this moment of opportunity? Several unions are drawing members into home defense actions.

Ah-Choo! Movement for Paid
Sick Leave Spreads

With more than 44 million Americans lacking access to paid sick leave, coalitions to win time off have emerged in half a dozen cities and several states. Enforcing the laws once they're won has proved challenging.

After parents occupied Chicago's Piccolo Elementary School, they won a commitment from the school board to meet and discuss the "turnarounds," measures that would fire all the staff and hand schools over to a private operator. The dialogue didn't change the result.

Operation Zip Code

In New York City, a citywide coalition, the Community-Labor United
for Postal Jobs and Services, is mobilizing nationally for a March 17
action to halt the plot to destroy and privatize the Post Office.
We're holding a march and rally that day to commemorate a victorious
postal strike that broke the back of Pres. Richard Nixon’s racist
union-busting austerity program in 1970.

The 1970 strike was in perfect tune with the Civil Rights movement,
which opened up doors to Blacks, Latinos, women and LGTB to jobs,
benefits and services and won dignity and respect for the postal
unions and their members.

*NOW WORKERS FACE AUSTERITY, RACISM AND CLASS WARFARE!*

A class war is now on against workers--organized and unorganized;
poor and oppressed, women and LGBT. The class enemy's one face is that
of unprecedented wealth, the 1%. They aim to privatize trillions of
dollars of public property, including the Post Office system.
Outsourcing threatens *200,000 postal jobs, and 3,600 Post Offices,
processing and distribution centers. *

For the targeted communities of Black and other people of color and
for the rural poor, all who depend on these services, the cuts are a
monumental disaster. Immigrants, seniors, the disabled will be forced
to travel long distances to pay bills or send money.

Today 42 years since the 1970 strike, the 1% in transnational banks,
corporate monopolies, private equity conglomerates, and plantation
land-syndicates are planning to expand their racist austerity
programs. Communities of color are fighting back with their own
demands for jobs and income, an end to hunger and poverty, to
evictions and foreclosures, to immigrant-bashing and deportations, to
"stop and frisk," and for a social contract with decent health care,
free improved public education, and affordable housing. The postal
struggle joins these life and death struggles. Our multinational
working class is coming together, organized and unorganized, to resist
this class war.

Organizations like Occupy 4 Jobs and the Bail Out the People Movement
are on the front lines confronting this unprecedented attack. Bail Out
the People has issued a call for resistance, and has supported the
call for the March 17 march and rally.

There is a growing list of labor and community organizations adding
their support.

Since we started our campaign on Friday, several major advertisers have pulled their support from the Rush Limbaugh Show,1 the most popular commercial radio show in the country and a key piece of the rightwing message machine. The backlash has been so great that even after doubling down in defense of his reprehensible comments, Limbaugh was forced to issue a rare — and totally insufficient — apology stating "my choice of words was not the best."2

Rush Limbaugh is clearly feeling the pressure of our activism. But his so-called apology isn't nearly enough. After his long history of being supported by advertisers while making offensive and irresponsible statements, he shouldn't get yet another chance. This should be the last straw.

He still retains major national advertisers who continue to fund his misogynistic rants. We need your help to build on our momentum and deal Republicans a major setback in their war against women.

Tell Rush Limbaugh's advertisers: Stop Supporting Rush Limbaugh's a...

When Sandra Fluke, a Georgetown Law School student, testified before Congress to protest rightwing attacks to limit women's access to birth control, Rush Limbaugh called her a "slut" and a "prostitute."

Here's what Limbaugh actually said:

"What does that make her? It makes her a slut, right? It makes her a prostitute... She wants to be paid to have sex. She's having so much sex she can't afford the contraception."3

Unfortunately, what Rush Limbaugh says matters. He has a bigger audience than any other commercial radio host in the country, and what he talks about on air has the power to drive the Republican agenda — an agenda that is already obsessed with radical backslides of womens' ability to protect their own health.4

Tell Rush Limbaugh's advertisers: Stop Supporting Rush Limbaugh's a...

Sandra Fluke's testimony before Congress included important points about why access to affordable birth control is so crucial, including the story of a friend who had lost an ovary because she couldn't afford the birth control needed to manage her ovarian cysts.

Rush's unforgivable translation of that was "slut" and "prostitute." Sandra Fluke rightly has called Rush Limbaugh's comments "an attack on all women."5We agree.

Every American enjoys the right to free speech, but that doesn't mean that advertisers who are accountable to their customers should pay people like Rush Limbaugh who make such appallingly hateful and sexist comments.

Already the mattress retailer Sleep Train has pulled its advertisements, explaining in a Tweet: "We are pulling our ads with Rush Limbaugh and appreciate the community's feedback." 6

Rush's other advertisers need to hear from us loud and clear — if you advertise on Rush Limbaugh, you are supporting his reprehensible attacks on women.

Tell Rush Limbaugh's advertisers: Stop Supporting Rush Limbaugh's a...

In the fight against the Susan G. Komen Foundation we proved that when women and the men who support them fight back against those who would restrict women's access to healthcare, we can win. And MSNBC's recent firing of commentator Pat Buchanan after a campaign protesting his white supremacist rhetoric shows that there will be consequences when certain lines are crossed.

Rush Limbaugh has a long history of hateful rhetoric. But with his comments this week, Rush Limbaugh has crossed the lineat a moment when women, and the men who believe in equal rights for women, are more organized than ever and are ready to fight back.

We will not let the rightwing take away women's access to birth control. We will not let Republicans brand women who assert their right to health care as "sluts" and "prostitutes."

Thank you for joining CREDO in taking action to stop the escalating attacks on women and hold Rush Limbaugh and the Republican message machine accountable.

There are no more "tickets" for this!  Tickets only went to members of the law school.
I heard on the radio tonight after midnight that Eric Holder is to give a major speech at Northwestern Univ today (Mon, March 5); topic is to be the NDAA provision of arrest and detention of U.S. citizens.  That's all the info that was in the newscast.
