Past and Present

The Social Democrats, USA is the over 110 years old organization that is the direct descendent of the Socialist Party,USA the party of Eugene V. Debs, Helen Keller, Norman Thomas, and other great socialists of the past. The Socialist Party U.S.A., at its national convention on December 30, 1972, by a majority vote of the delegates, voted to change the name of the organization to Social Democrats, U.S.A. While we are an old organization chronologically, we have entered this second decade of the 21st Century under a new leadership with a fresh political outlook gained from looking back and learning from both the achievements and mistakes of our past. We have a unique opening, to begin anew, to revive and rebuild the SD maintaining the best traditions of the last 30+ year history of the organizations, while changing those policies which are no longer appropriate for today.

SDUSA had a very strong relationship with the AFL-CIO under Lane Kirkland, and was the driving force behind the Polish Solidarity movement. However, that relationship was strained in more recent years. Today, with the help of the USW, we are rebuilding that relationship, as well as our relationship with the A. Philip Randolph Institute.

Why were your relations good with Lane Kirkland but "strained" afterwards? What does the USW have to do with bettering these relations?

The historical role of the Socialist Party has been as social chauvinist party, with the exception of Debs, they all have supported the various imperialist wars and believe in non-violent struggle by workers, supported the racist NYC teachers strike led by "national socialist" Albert Shanker in the 1960's .
You brag about the relationship with Lane Kirkland?? He was a CIA agent who helped destroy the labor movement in many places in Central and South America.
