REACT: Write Back, Fight Back

Recent coverage of public sector unions in The Economist provoked me to start up a new group, REACT. I figured that it is time for us to participate in media, defend our position and write back, collectively.

This is the forum where you can share your frustrations with media depictions of collective bargaining, trade unionism or labour activism and call on all for assistance.

As a broadcaster, media analyst, public relations and communications worker, I say it is time for us to rehabilitate the public image of labour, and it has to start now.

It might be a small consolation, but the fact that the labour movement gets such negative coverage from corporate media is simply because it represents a threat, however minimal it is at present, to their expropriation of the wealth created by our labour.

Nonetheless, we should try by all means that we have to challenge their misrepresentation of us while at the same time reminding everyone we know that for-profit corporate media is going to represent issues that they have a stake in in a way that helps their bottom line. Everyone will -- or should -- understand that logic.
