UnionBook

The social network for trade unionists - a LabourStart project.

The Star seems to have a sentimental attachement to the rump of the old Communist Party, the CPB.

They might do better to pay more attention to courting unions like the RMT who might bung some serious money their way.

The paper`s past is not its future. The future lies in the mainstream of the labour movement.

The Morning Star is owned and run by its shareholders among whom are many trade union activists and leaders as well as members of the Labour Party, the CPB and no party at all. So not sure what your point is really - apart from the fact that you have may have some issue with the CPB?

Quite honestly without members of the CPB promoting, selling and distributing the paper over the last decade the paper would cease to exist. Not sure what is 'sentimental' about a working class supporting  daily paper promoting progressive ideas and giving coverage to working class struggle and campaigns. Take a look at today's coverage of Thursday's protests at www.morninstaronline.co.uk and tell me what is sentimental about that.

Trish is right, if it wasn't for CPB members supporting, selling, buying and invariably funding the paper over the years, it doesn't really seem feasible that it would still exist.

Unions like RMT place adverts in the paper and buy bulk editions for conferences etc. But, I'm not sure even Bob Crow could justify large scale funding of the paper from his union members' pockets, or if he would even want to. And anyway, what would happen when there is a leadership change in the union?

The fact that the CPB has made the Star its no 1 priority is to the party's credit.

Time to ditch the CPB [?]

Sorry but I had a good laugh at that one. The capitalists have been trying to dump the CP for 90 years.  If you read Christopher Andrew's excellent official history of MI5 you will see they spent about 70 per cent of the book trying to dump the CP too. And let's not forget the blacklisters, the Murdochs etc. So Millwallb - you keep good company. But without the CP and its supporters you would have no non sectarian newspaper of the Left to fret about and nothing to move in to the mainstream. But good luck all the same.
