Rise up singing!

There is a union music group on the "old" UnionBook site, so I thought I'd start one here too. Discussion of singers and songs of struggle, solidarity, and social justice.

Reposting: I direct the Twin Cities Labor Chorus, and have been kicking around the idea of publishing a Labor Songs for Choirs book. Is anyone interested in collaborating on this? Songs you've arranged?

Also, if you're interested in doing an arrangement or original song, let me know, as we're always looking for new music to sing.

I invite all of you to see my powerful rendition of "The Banks of Marble" The lyrics are completely rewritten and are totally in vogue with the current world Depression. I dare say the lyrics are a vast improvement over the liberal-socialist original. Pointing to revolution for an egalitarian society rather than socialism with the vestiges of the capitalist wage system.

Ya know, I think the workers at the Red and Black Cafe just made it themselves. It's kind of a punk rock, do-it-yourself effort. I bet if you called them or emailed them, they could send you one. The website is: http://redandblackcafe.com. They were asking for a $3 donation for the songbook...I bet they'd send some in the mail.

Nathan, that sounds like a treasure - who publishes it, and it it available elsewhere?

Well, I stopped in at the Red and Black Cafe in Portland, Oregon tonight--The Red and Block is an IWW union shop--and they were selling a great little book called "Songs For a MayDay Picnic!" It includes some classics like Solidarity Forever and Roll the Union, and it fits right in your pocket. The neat thing is that it also included some songs that you don't find in other booklets such as Do They Owe Us a Living? by the British punk band Crass. It's great to see folks still making radical song books to pass around and use. And if you haven't been to the Red and Black, make sure you do.

Hey, Jim, thanks for dragging me into the 21st Century. I joined last.fm and will be downloading tunes you sang. Maybe I can get rid of the 8-track and use the gift iPod I got. Cool hat.

Good stuff there, Jim!

If there's a Wobbly song you don't know the tune of, I'll be glad to sing it for you :) Once you know it, you can pass it on. I recorded a number of songs, mostly from the "Big Red Songbook" at http://www.last.fm/music/Jim+Giddings/Wob+Songs , where they can be downloaded freely as mp3s. I also made a playlist on last.fm , which you can play if you're a last.fm subscriber. It's mostly songs written by or performed by folks with some IWW connection, though there are some good songs by others included in order to pad out the playlist a bit.

Hey, just got my copy of the new edition of Songs of the IWW from the Literature Dept. www.iww.org. Trouble is, I don't play except for harmonica, and I don't know half the tunes. Anyway, the new edition is in print and for sale.
