Mark, sorry for the delay in reply to your suggestions regarding the Pilbara and Wattie Creek strike songs. Looking forward to listening to them soon. We should push forward these songs in the light of the union - aboriginal community jobs and development pacts.

Corey and Don
there two songs commenting on the 1946 Pilbara strike by Aboriginal workers one, a poem, by Dorothy Hewett (http://unionsong.com/u399.html) written at the time and one written earlier this year by Aboriginal singer/songwriter Shane Howard (http://unionsong.com/u670.html). Bothe are called Clancy and Dooley and Don McLeod

There is also a song written about the Aboriginal Wattie Creek strike in the 1960s by Aboriginal songwriter Kev Carmody and his mate Paul Kelly ... the famous From Little Things Big Things Grow (http://unionsong.com/u036.html) Both of these strikes played a critical part in Australian history and both were supported by by unions. The Pilbara Strike was well supported by the Fremantle Branch of the Seamen's Union of Australia and the Wattie Creek sit in by the Darwin Branch of the Waterside Workers' Federation. They are good places to start I think.

Hmmm... 100 million go on strike in India. Is this the biggest strike ever? Any of you union history buffs know? http://www.imfmetal.org/index.cfm?c=23927&l=2

Here is a link to a review of an important new book about Percy Brookfield, a great socialist politician in Australia in the early part of the twentieth century: http://chriswhiteonline.org/2010/09/conviction-politics/

There's been an interesting discussion recently on the New Unionism group about the whole reform vs revolution thing. It's an age old question with deep historical roots. I've just set up a separate group to discuss this (http://unionbook2.ning.com/group/reformorrevolution)... thought it might be relevant to let you know here.

Union history people will find Peter Warman's review of Pal Mason's book at the Main Page really worthwhile, and also the book. I have also commented another great book on working class history: "The Many Headed Hydra".

I've been investigating the 'New Unionism' of the late 19th century -- the movement that basically established the form of industrial/general unions. It's an intriguing time, leading up to the big communist/social democrat split, with lots of parallels with the present. Have managed to get my hands on a digital version of a text called The New Unionism by Andre Tridon (1913). Long out of print. Happy to email folks a copy after I've done a bit of post-scan tidying up. Just send me yr email to phj@newunionism.net

Corey, I can suggest that you make contact with Kevin Tory at the Trade Union Committee for Aboriginal Rights? My apologies if you already have done so.
Another starting point might be the book and documentary about the Aboriginal sit down strike in the Pilbara just after the second world war. The key whitefella in that was Don McLeod and his biography and story of the strike is worth searching for - libraries, decent second hand bookshops, and left wing individuals around Adelaide. Regarding South Australia, there are some short references in Jim Moss' "The Sound of Trumpets".

I am working on a project regarding the "history of Trade Union involvement with Aboriginal issues" How would I find this information out?
