JOIN THE FIGHT TO PROTECT SOCIAL SECURITY AND MEDICARE!

PICKETLINE / VIGIL

Friday April 26

12 Noon- 1 PM

Senator Robert Casey’s office

Regional Enterprise Tower

425 Sixth Avenue

Pittsburgh 15219

Obama has made it clear that he will propose cuts to Social Security and Medicare and other safety net programs. Join the fight before it’s too late. Sit back and do nothing and it will happen. Senator Casey needs to take a stand and vote against any cuts.  An organized and mobilized grassroots movement can stop these cuts.  Over 70% of the public strongly rejects all proposals to cut Social Security and Medicare.

Premature infants were subjected to medical experiments without their parents
being informed of the risks.

Not a century ago or in a faraway
country.

Within the past eight years.

In the United States of
America.

At prestigious institutions like Yale, Stanford, Brown and
Duke.

With federal funding.

Between 2005 and 2009 — at 23
hospitals throughout the country run by prominent universities — 1,316 premature
infants were the subjects of a government-funded clinical trial where some
received more oxygen than others.

The parents of these helpless
research subjects were never informed that some newborns would be at increased
risk of blindness, lung injury, brain damage or even death.

Add your name to our petition demanding that Health
and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius: (1) apologize to the families of
infants who were experimented on without their parents’ informed consent; (2)
fully disclose to them the risks the study posed to their children; and (3)
ensure that no federally funded studies repeat this tragic breach of scientific
ethics.

Tell HHS to stand by its decision and protect access to affordable contraception.

Dear ACLU Supporter,
In a breakthrough for women's health, the Obama administration has ensured that millions of women have access to affordable, effective contraception. But anti-family planning forces are waging an all-out campaign to prevent women from getting affordable access to this basic health care. They are claiming that your boss should be able to control your health care decisions.
We can't let them succeed. That's why I'm hoping you will immediately write to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and urge it to stand by its decision – contraception is basic health care and must be available in health insurance plans.
The deadline for public comment on the current plan is right around the corner. HHS needs to hear from you and me and all Americans who support women's fundamental right to contraception.
Please act right now by urging the Obama administration tostand firm against the anti-family planning lobby's ploy to weaken the impact of this enormous step forward. Together, we can help protect the right to contraception for millions of women across the country.

Please go here to thank the "Medicare 111" and encourage them to stand strong on their commitment to protect Social Security and Medicare.

Dear :
President Obama released a budget that would reduce Social Security benefits and shift healthcare costs onto seniors enrolled in Medicare.
This proposed budget includes a "chained CPI" for Social Security, which Sen. Elizabeth Warren called "just a fancy way to say 'cut benefits for seniors, the permanently disabled, and orphans.'" Additionally, his budget would shift Medicare costs onto seniors by introducing new premiums for some, cutting safety net payments to providers serving low-income communities, and penalizing the purchase of comprehensive Medigap coverage.

This is unacceptable.

Thankfully, 111 House members signed a letter to Obama saying: "We write to affirm our vigorous opposition to cutting Social Security, Medicare, or Medicaid benefits in any final bill to replace sequestration."

Please go here to thank the "Medicare 111" and encourage them to st...

Remind them that Medicare costs less than private health insurance. Expanding it to everyone in the US through a single-payer plan, like HR 676, would eliminate the federal deficit.

Go here to sign the petition--it's easy.

Sincerely, Ben, Zoraida, and Jeff Healthcare-NOW! National Staff
P.S. If you want to tell Obama how unhappy you are with his budget, call the White House at 202-456-1111.

Union-bargained cross-employer health care plans should have been a model for health care reform, but they face an uncertain future under the Affordable Care Act.

The regular ISPC Chicago business meeting will follow this special presentation:

The single-payer movement and the Robin Hood Tax: Why do we care?
The Robin Hood Tax is a name given by our allies at National Nurses United (NNU) to a tax on financial transactions, it is also known as a financial speculation tax. The ISPC Board endorsed the movement for such a tax in 2012. We don't need this tax to fund a single-payer health care system:
  • The US already spends more than enough money to take care of everybody.
  • Our public health care spending (Medicare, Medicaid, public employees' and retirees' health insurance premiums, tax credits for employer-sponsored health insurance) is greater than other industrialized countries' total spending, yet we have worse outcomes.
So why do we care?
Join ISPC Chicago for a presentation by a speaker from NNU and a discussion of this issue.
