Comment by Joe Balkis on March 4, 2012 at 14:21 First of all I want to thank everyone for their recruitment efforts. We have seen a recent influx of members to unionbook. We should be over 5,000 soon. Secondly I would also like to recruit for this group, so feel free to invite your unionbook friends.
I have been sending out my usually emails & I have put links to unionbook in them. I have also put links to unionbook on my usual facebook posts. I have been promoting unionbook word of mouth when talking to my members, as well as when I am out leafletting.
In addition to recruitment we can also have a boycott. My understanding is that facebook makes money from advertisement. So we can kill two birds with one stone. We can target anti-union companies that advertise on facebook. I already have general boycott groups in place. We can possible create a Boycott facebook advertisers page/group. Let me know what you think. Also let me know if your on facebook. If you are friend me on their, I'm John Brown. The picture is John Brown kissing a baby, going to his execution.
Comment by Joe Balkis on February 26, 2012 at 4:46 Your welcome Louisa, keep up the good work.
Screenburst i was thinking the same thing until they said i violated some policy but refused to tell me which. And at times when they said I made friend requests of people that I did not have many friends in common with. I think its a mix of automated system & partisan politics
So it seems that while they claim that Facebook launched the so-called "Revolution" in Egypt they don't want any seriously orgnized attempt to launch one that REALLY challenges the monopoly of power and wealth of finance capital. It my well be that they will spawn Facebook into some fascist patriotic mass in the future, that is after they commercialize and spam every one to death first.
Comment by Brian Ross Ashley on February 22, 2012 at 19:22 You don't even have to be far left to have it happen - Derek Blackadder, a perfectly ordinary organiser with a Canadian public service union and correspondent for LabourStart, has been bounced a couple of times.I've not been bothered myself so far but it could happen.
it could be because of complaints from facebook members, if you do too much they treat you like spam, just a possibility. but i have heard that many pro union left leaning groups have had similar situations to yours
Comment by Joe Balkis on February 22, 2012 at 17:45 They have kicked off anti-capitalist leftist pro union/worker groups and members. They say for some policy violation (they enforce arbitrarily) but they won't say which. Before they kicked me off, they repeatedly blocked me from making friend requests & posting. This is after all the time & effort building up to over 1,000 friends & 300 groups.
They are up to the same tricks & then some. They recently blocked me from making friend requst for 14 days. So I sent messages to people to request me & then they blocked messaging too. They archived groups & then migrated the members. 1984 orwellian speak for deleting members if they don't re sign up. They deleted me out of groups before I had the time to re sign up. It is very user unfriendly The way they have it set up & the changes they make, make it difficult to organize union acivty.
Comment by louisa on February 22, 2012 at 6:59 i post regularly petitions onto my face book and the groups i am in.. and thus far no one has complain... but like you said Ira, we should look at creating Labour group on face book, wow just thinking of a Labour group.. will be fantastic
Comment by louisa on February 22, 2012 at 6:55 thanks for invite :)
Sounds like a good idea. By the way what limitations is Facebook putting on unions and working class organizations to limit discussion or contact one another?
Comment by Joe Balkis on February 19, 2012 at 13:36 Our first move we need to do is invite people to unionbook. We need to invite our real life union brothers & sisters to unionbook. It can be done many ways. It can be done word of mouth, send emails, texts, tweets, instant messages. We can even flier or have sign up sheets where we enter their info for them. We also need to recruit on facebook. There has been a lot of changes on facebook which are not good for unions & organizing & I am still working on getting around it. What we can do is post on union friendly groups & message people on joining unionbook.
