Today is a day of mourning for the children of Chicago. Their education has been hijacked by an unrepresentative, unelected corporate school board, acting at the behest of a mayor who has no vision for improving the education of our children. Closing schools is not an education plan. It is a scorched earth policy. Evidence shows that the underutilization crisis has been manufactured.  Their own evidence also shows the school district will not garner any significant savings from closing these schools.
Our fight for education justice has now moved to the courts, but it must eventually move to the ballot box.  The parents are amazing leaders in their school communities and because of this administration’s actions we have all become closer and more united.  We must resist this neoliberal savagery masquerading as school reform.  We must resist racism in all of its forms as well as the escalating attacks on the working –class and the poor. Our movement will continue. This is the next level:

Did today make you sick? Only way to stop them is to beat them at the ballot box.
The CTU will join a coalition of community, labor, and justice organizations and activists who are fed up with the status quo and want to change the face of City Hall and the General Assembly – literally. The mayor, some members of the City Council and some members of the Illinois General Assembly have failed to listen to the voices of thousands of parents, educators, students, school employees and activists on school closings, so a comprehensive voter registration and education campaign will begin on the day after the Board of Education votes to close our school.
On Thursday May 23rd @ Bethel AME Church 4440 S. Michigan Avenue from 5:60-7:30 PM we will have officials from Cook County Clerk David Orr's office provide us our 1st Deputy Registrar Training.
Our goal – 1000 deputy registrars and 100,000 newly registered voters by 2015
Please join us, and help us take back our city.

Second Segment: Bad Swaps
Jackson Potter, Staff Coordinator for the Chicago Teachers Union, walks us through what Swaps are and how Chicago banks, including Bank of America, made a big killing when Chicago Public Schools swapped a fixed rate loan back in 2003 for a variable rate. Potter clearly explains graphically (and Labor Beat animates it) what happened in 2008 when interest rates plummeted and CPS lost millions to Chicago bankers.
Potter points out that since the banks got bailed out by all of us after they made some bad gambles, why shouldn't CPS get bailed out in return by the banks? However, CPS has no interest in raising this issue, as if they really sympathized more with local banks than with the public schools, for which they are supposed to be the stewards.
The seminar, led by Potter, then decides to walk across the street to a branch of Bank of America and deliver a letter (from Grassroots Collaborative). The letter is addressed to Tim Maloney, Illinois President of Bank of America, saying "It is time for your bank to repair the damage it has done to our school districts across the country by agreeing to renegotiate these toxic swap deals at no cost to taxpayers."

Dear Chicago Teachers Solidarity Campaign supporters,

The Caucus of Rank and File Educators (CORE) of the Chicago Teachers Union contacted us to ask if we have any volunteers who would be interested in helping distribute CORE campaign flyers this week to teachers and staff at schools. The CTU election is Friday May 17. CORE is campaigning to re-elect the leadership team that led the union through the successful September 2012 strike: Karen Lewis, Jesse Sharkey, Kristine Mayle, and Michael Brunson.

Below is a message with details from CORE member and CTU teacher Sarah Chambers. They are looking for folks who can distribute flyers before or after school to teachers and staff. Even if you can only go out one morning or afternoon to help, your support would be most welcome.

…Steven

We need YOUR help to pass out flyers and posters to every school this week and next week, so we ensure that the CTU stays a fighting union with CORE as the leadership. We can't underestimate the other caucus, so we need our people on the ground, flyering the schools!

Please call the regional lead to find out which schools need flyering: North: Nate Rasmussen northsideCORE@gmail.com 312-607-4828

STOP the Racist School Closures!
A forum featuring parents, teachers, students, and activists in the fight to save public education
Wednesday, May 8, 7PM
Grace United Methodist Church
3325 W. Wrightwood, Logan Square
Chicago has had enough of education apartheid! While Mayor Emanuel’s kids get small classes, arts, music, and state-of-the-art technology, Rahm claims he must shut down, consolidate, and turnaround more than 70 public schools. Of the 30,000 students who would be displaced by these attacks, 88 percent are Black and 94 percent are low income. But parents, students, teachers, and communities are fighting back! Join us for a panel discussion on how we can to fight for a city without poverty, racism, and endless cuts; a city that prioritizes excellent public schools for every child.
The panel will feature:
Sherise McDaniels, parent and organizer fighting for Manierre Elementary
Marilena Marchetti, CTU Occupational Therapist
Sponsored by the Logan Square branch of the International Socialist Organization. chicagosocialists.org **Free childcare available—Bring the kids!

There is an attempt to do an end run around the Board of Education through the Zoning Committee to approve
Concepts Charter School sat 2245 W. Pershing changed so the vacant warehouse, a former industrial building
could become Horizon Science Charter School Academy McKinley Park in September 2013.
There will be zoning hearing Tuesday April 30, 2013 at city Hall. It is being reported that it will be slipped onto the agenda.
Do not be fooled by media reports we all need to make sure that the alderman understands not to support this charter school.

Ald. George Cardenas (12th), whose ward includes the proposed McKinley Park charter, was hesitant to talk about the controversy for fear of alienating Emanuel. “I don’t want to have conflict. It doesn’t help anybody,” he said. “I support the school and I’m going to find out what’s going on. I will work with the administration to assuage any concerns they would have.”(4/25/13, Sun-Times)

see information below about the Alderman's position and early article regarding this issue.
