People who believe that capitalism is flawed often ask socialists why there are so many different left organisations. Others ponder: what’s the difference between anarchists and socialists when they seem to have much more in common than the things they disagree about?
Do you think it makes sense to unite in the face of our foes? This forum will explore how to achieve unity and build a broad movement without being forced to hide or abandon core beliefs to achieve this! Learn how Leon Trotsky’s concept of the united front — an alliance of disparate people who share a common class interest against a mutual foe — can build a powerful and unified fighting force.
Speaker: Alison Thorne. Alison is the Melbourne Branch Organiser for the Freedom Socialist Party. In the 90s, she was a leader of Campaign Against the Nazis, which drove a National Action bookshop out of Fawkner. She headed the 2001 Socialist Alliance Victorian Senate ticket. A union delegate, she leads grassroots campaigns to stop Aboriginal deaths in custody and win equal pay. She is part of the Occupy movement.
Chair: Anthea Stutter. Anthea is a socialist and feminist passionate about putting united front organising into practice. She is a member of the Socialist Alliance, a workplace activist with the Community and Public Sector Union and part of Campaign for Women’s Reproductive Rights and Pay Justice Action.
